Royals Fall 2-1 to Spartans in Home Opener

Irvine, CA – The Hope International men's soccer team (1-1) couldn't hold an early lead as they fell 2-1 to the Missouri Baptist University Spartans on Monday afternoon in their home opener at OC Great Park Field 18 in Irvine, CA.

Both teams had big chances to start the game as Uriel Sanchez fired just wide off a great ball into the box in the tenth minute. The Spartans would also have several great chances but Royals goalie Berlin Torres kept them off the board early on. It would be the Royals who opened the scoring as Brandon Galindo whipped a great ball into the box for freshman George Peterson who headed home to put the Royals up 1-0 in the 24th minute for his first career Royals goal. The lead wouldn't last long though as the Spartans used their size on a corner kick to tie the game 1-1 in the 31st minute. Both teams settled in defensively from there as the game was all tied 1-1 at the half.

The Spartans came out on the attack to start the second half as they created several opportunities early on but goalie Milton Herrera who had just come in came up with several saves to keep the game tied. The Royals then created a great chance to take the lead in the 55th minute but Andy Cabrera's shot just missed to the left as the Royals were unable to capitalize. The Spartans then took the lead in the 70th minute as they took advantage of a rebound in front of goal to make it 2-1. The Royals tried to equalize but were unable to create any chances as they fell 2-1. Torres played the first half and recorded two saves while Herrera played the second half and recorded three saves.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Oregon Tech on Saturday, September 7 at 7:00 PM at OC Great Park Field 18 in Irvine, CA.
