Royals Fall to Eagles and Owls on Final Day of Summer Slam

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International women's volleyball team (1-3) dropped their final two games of the Summer Slam as they fell 3-1 to the Northwest University Eagles and 3-2 to the Oregon Institute of Technology Owls on Saturday at home in the Darling Pavilion.

Game 1:
The Royals got off to a slow start as the Eagles flew out to an 8-1 lead. The Royals quickly called a timeout and used a 3-0 run to make it 8-4, but once again the Eagles pulled out to a 14-6 lead. The Royals didn't give in as they used a 7-1 run led by two kills from Cassidy Koffroth to pull within 15-13 but that was as close as they got as the Eagles went on to take set one 25-16 for a 1-0 lead. The second set was a similar story as the Eagles led from start to finish jumping out to a 12-5 advantage before going on to lead 18-10. The Royals didn't give in as they used a 10-4 run to pull within 22-20 on a kill by Addie Mathias but once again the Eagles closed out the set winning 25-20 as the Royals trailed 2-0.

The Eagles would take an early lead in the third set but the Royals weren't about to be swept as they went on a 19-4 run led by five service aces from Chloe Mata and two kills from Mathias to take a commanding 20-8 lead. The Eagles would fight back to make it 23-14 but the Royals would close out the set with a block from Yale Spoja and Rachael Street to win 25-14 and make it 2-1. The Eagles would take the early lead in the fourth set but the Royals looked to extend the game as they went on a 7-1 run with two kills from Koffroth to take a 10-9 lead. The game would then swing back and forth until a kill by Koffroth put the Royals ahead 24-22. The Royals then had multiple chances to close out the set but were unable to do so as they fell 29-27 and 3-1. Koffroth led the Royals with 11 kills and Florez led with 19 assists.

Game 2:
The Owls jumped all over the Royals to begin the final game of the Summer Slam as they took an early 10-6 lead in the first set. The Royals would rally with two quick points to make it 10-8, but that was as close as they would get as the Owls closed the set on a 10-0 run to win 25-10 and take a 1-0 lead. The Royals rebounded nicely in the second set as they raced out to an 8-3 lead with two service aces from Caron Florez and two kills from Koffroth. The Owls would rally to get within 8-7 but the Royals held strong as they went on an 8-1 run led by two kills from Rachael Street to take a commanding 16-8 lead. The Royals then stopped the Owls from mounting any comeback attempt as they went on to win the set 25-17 off a Savannah Salter kill to tie the game 1-1.

The third set was a battle as both teams looked to take control of the game. The teams would exchange leads throughout the set as a Salter kill put the Royals up 14-13. The Owls would respond to take an 18-17 lead before the Royals came back to lead 21-20. The Owls then responded on a 5-1 run to close out the set 25-22 and take a 2-1 lead. The Royals looked to stay alive in the fourth set as the game was tied 6-6 early on. The Royals then seized control with a 9-1 run led by two kills by Yale Spoja to take a 15-7 lead. The Owls rallied to get within 16-12 but the Royals answered with a 6-1 run led by two kills from Matthias to extend their lead to 22-13. The Owls would get within 24-17 before Kat Schwab delivered a huge kill to win the set 25-17 and tie the game 2-2.

The Owls took early control in the decisive fifth set as they led 9-6 midway through it. The Royals rallied to tie it 12-12 with a kill by Koffroth and a forced error by Stacey Dawes. The Owls had all the answers though as the Royals fell 15-12 and 3-2 in a five set thriller. Koffroth led the Royals with 13 kills while Matthias led with 21 assists.

The Royals will return to action on Thursday, August 29 for the Labor Day Tourney where they will play Providence Christian at 2:00 PM and Westcliff at 5:00 PM at home in the Darling Pavilion.
