Royals Split with Red Hawks and No. 10 Raiders on First Day of Summer Slam

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International women's volleyball team (1-1) opened up the 2024 HIU Summer Slam Tournament with a split as they swept the Simpson University Red Hawks 3-0 before falling 3-1 to the No. 10 Southern Oregon University Raiders on Friday at home in the Darling Pavilion.

Game 1:
The first set was a battle as the Red Hawks took an early 13-10 lead but the Royals would battle back on a 9-0 run led by six service aces from Cassidy Koffroth with five of them coming in a row to put the Royals up 19-13. The Royals would go on to take a 24-18 advantage with back to back kills from Koffroth and Rachael Street but the Red Hawks didn't give up as they rallied to get within 24-22. That's as close as the Royals would let them get as they closed out the set forcing a service error to win 25-22 and take a 1-0 lead. The second set was back and forth as the Red Hawks took an early lead but the Royals seized control with a 4-0 run to take a 13-9 lead. The Red Hawks would come back to tie the game 15-15 but the Royals had all the answers as they went on a 6-1 run led by three kills from Addie Mathias to take a 22-16 lead. The Royals would then close out the set winning 25-18 and taking a 2-0 lead.

The third set was close to begin with as the Red Hawks looked to stay alive but the Royals used a 5-0 run led by three service aces from Caron Florez to take a 14-8 lead. The Red Hawks once again came storming back to get within 25-23 but the Royals closed out the set with a big kill from Koffroth to win 25-23 and 3-0 giving Coach Jamie Hofman her first win in her first game as Head Coach. Addie Mathias led the Royals with 13 kills, Caron Florez led with 19 assists and Koffroth led with nine service aces.

Game 2:
The No. 10 ranked Raiders jumped out to a 10-3 lead as they looked to take control of the game. The Royals rallied on an 8-2 run led by kills from Savannah Salter, Rachael Street, Cassidy Koffroth and Judy Juhala to pull within 12-11. The Raiders slowly but surely would pull away to take a 24-16 advantage but the Royals weren't done as they went on a 6-0 run led by kills from Koffroth and Yale Spoja to pull within 24-22. The Raiders weren't about to drop their first set of the year as they came through with a kill to win the set 25-22 and take a 1-0 lead. The second set was a battle as the teams exchanged leads before the Raiders pulled away to take a 16-10 lead. The Royals once again rallied to tie the game 18-18, but again the Raiders pulled away to go up 22-18. The Royals weren't done though as they came roaring back on a 6-0 run finished off by a Mathias kill to take a 24-22 lead. The Raiders would answer to get within one but Rachel Holmberg delivered a huge kill for the Royals to win 25-23, handing the Raiders their first set loss of the year as the Royals tied the game 1-1.

The Raiders quickly bounced back in the third set as they raced out to a 6-1 lead before going on to lead 17-9 late in the set. The Royals tried to fight back as they got within five twice at 21-16 and 24-17 but the Raiders had all the answers as they took the set 25-19 and took a 2-1 lead. The Royals weren't about to go down easily as they started the third fourth set on a 7-2 run. The Raiders would rally right back to take a 13-12 lead but the Royals came back as the teams exchanged leads with a kill by Spoja putting them up 17-16. The Raiders would come back to take a 20-18 lead but the Royals answered with a 5-1 run led by three kills from Spoja to take a 24-21 lead. The Raiders weren't about to lose their second set of the season as they answered with a 5-0 run as the Royals fell 26-24 and 3-1 despite a valiant effort against one of the top teams in the NAIA. Koffroth led the Royals with 12 kills while Florez led with 19 assists.

The Royals will return to action tomorrow at the HIU Summer Slam as they take on Northwest at 12:00 PM before wrapping up the tournament against Oregon Tech at 4:00 PM.
