Royals Trounce Lions 6-1 in Season Opening Win

Aliso Viejo, CA – The Hope International men's soccer team (1-0) scored six unanswered goals as they came away with a big 6-1 win over the SOKA University of America Lions to open up their 2024 season on Wednesday night on the road in Aliso Viejo, CA.

The Royals started off slow as it was the Lions who started on the front foot creating several chances before finding the opening goal in the 5th minute as the Royals fell behind 1-0. The Royals quickly regrouped and responded within a few minutes as Cristian Carranza found team captain Braulio Morales to tie the game 1-1 in the 12th minute. The Royals would then take their first lead five minutes later as Cerritos College transfer Uriel Sanchez opened his Royals account in the 17th minute with a rebound off a blocked shot to make it 2-1. The Royals continued to push for more as Carranza scored off a free kick to make it 3-1 in the 25th minute. The Royals continued to dominate from their as Sanchez scored his second of the game in the 39th minute to give the Royals a commanding 4-1 halftime lead.

The Royals continued to press forward in the second half and it didn't take long to find the mark as Sanchez finished off his hat trick in the 48th minute to extend the Royals lead to 5-1. The Lions tried to create some more opportunities but the Royals defense held firm allowing just two shots on goal. The Royals would then add to their lead again as George Peterson set up freshman Matthias Alcaraz for his first Royals goal to make it 6-1 in the 72nd minute. The Royals would outshoot the Lions 15-2 on target as they came away with a big 6-1 opening day victory. It would be the Royals largest margin of victory and most goals scored in a game against the Lions. Milton Herrera played the first half allowing just one goal while Berlin Torres played the second half allowing no goals with one save.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Missouri Baptist on Monday, August 26 at 12:00 PM at OC Great Park Field 18 in Irvine, CA.
