Royals Can't Hang On in Fourth Fall 80-71 to Mustangs

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (13-9, 5-7 GSAC) couldn't hold on to a third quarter lead as they fell 80-71 to the Master's University Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at home on senior day in the Darling Pavilion. 

The Mustangs got off to a quick start as they jumped out to a 10-3 lead. The Royals quickly answered with a three from Anyah Shamburger sparking a 7-3 run as they made it 13-10 midway through the quarter. The Mustangs would retake the momentum as they went up 29-17 but the Royals would close strung as a Casey Fust three pulled them within 29-22 at the break. The Royals quickly made it 31-27 on a three by Jada Long but the Mustangs pulled back out to a 35-27 advantage with 7:53 to go. The Royals came storming back on an 11-2 run to take a 39-37 lead on a big three by Shailissa Jarrett with 2:44 remaining. It was fight from there with the Mustangs retaking the lead until Shiane Talley drained a three to tie it 42-42 at halftime.

Keira McNamee quickly put the Royals back ahead with a three to start the quarter but the Mustangs came right back to take a 54-53 lead midway through the quarter. The teams would then exchange leads before the Mustangs tied the game 58-58 with 2:52 to go. The Royals then closed the quarter on an 8-3 run led by six points from Fust to take a 66-61 lead. The Royals couldn't hang on in the fourth as the Mustangs opened the quarter on a 17-0 run while the Royals offense went cold from the floor as the Mustangs went up 78-66. Fust answered with a three and Jarrett followed with a layup to make it 78-71 with :26 seconds left but it was too little too late as the Royals fell 80-71. Fust led with 20 points.while Jarrett added 15.

The Royals hit the road to wrap up GSAC play with their first stop in Glendale, AZ to take on Arizona Christian on Thursday, February 22 at 5:30 PM.
