Royals Fold Late Against Warriors 59-49

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team's (4-5) couldn't hold the lead as they fell 59-49 to the Westcliff University Warriors on Thursday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals got off to a good start as they opened on a 9-2 run led by four points from Amira Austin. The Warriors would battle back to get within 12-6 at the end of the first. Aliyah Gonzalez would increase the Royals lead to 14-6 to start the second but the Warriors came storming back on an 8-0 run tie the game 14-14 with 7:14 to go. Needing a response the Royals found some more offense as they went on a 5-0 run with a Jada Long layup putting them back up 19-14 with 4:40 remaining. The Warriors weren't done as they came back to tie it twice before retaking a 24-23 lead with :15 seconds left. The Royals had the final say though as Casey Fust was fouled on a buzzer beater attempt and knocked down all three free throws to give the Royals a 26-24 lead at halftime.

The Royals came out of the break strong as they opened on a 7-0 run finished off by a huge three from Faith Brinkman as they took a 33-24 lead with 6:46 left. Once again the Warriors came back as they took a 36-33 lead with 2:37 to go. The Royals would battle back to tie it on free throws before taking the lead on a buzzer beater three by Long to make it 39-36. The Warriors kept coming to start the fourth as they went up 42-41 with 7:06 to go. The Royals held strong as back to back layups by Amira Austin and Fust put the Royals up 45-42 midway through the quarter. The Royals were unable to hold the lead as the Warriors dialed up the full court press and finished on a 17-4 run with the Royals falling 59-49. Austin led the Royals with 12 points.

The Royals continue action on the road as they travel to Carson, CA to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, December 14 at 1:00 PM in an exhibition game. The Royals then return to regular season action as they welcome defending NAIA Champion and No. 1 ranked Dordt on Tuesday, December 17 at 3:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
