Rios's Early Strike Leads Royals to 1-0 Win Over Redhawks

Irvine, CA – The Hope International men's soccer team (10-3-3, 7-2-3 GSAC) won their second game in a row as they shutout the Benedictine University Mesa Redhawks 1-0 on Saturday evening at home at OC Great Park Field 18 in Irvine, CA. With the win the Royals also move into first place in the GSAC.

The Royals wasted no time finding the opening goal as Uriel Sanchez played a short corner to Isidro Rios who blasted home his first goal of the season just 52 seconds into the game to put the Royals up 1-0. The Redhawks looked for a response as they controlled the possession and created several chances but Royals goalie Berlin Torres came up with three big saves to keep them off the board. The Royals also looked to add to their lead but were unable to create any more scoring opportunities as they took a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The Royals pushed forward to start the second half and came close to scoring with chances from Christian Hernandez and Gio Marin but were unable to finish. As the game progressed the Redhawks began to control the game and generated several opportunities but once again Torres stood tall making a big save to keep them off the board. The Royals had several opportunities to get an insurance goal but were unable to convert. The Redhawks then had one late opportunity to tie it but their shot went over the bar as the Royals won 1-0. Torres played all 90 minutes delivering his second straight shutout while recording four saves.

With the win the Royals clinch a spot in the four team GSAC Championships. The Royals continue GSAC play on the road as they head to first place The Master's on Thursday, October 31 at 4:00 PM in Santa Clarita, CA.
