Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hernandez Winner Helps Shorthanded Royals Topple Mustangs 4-2

Santa Clarita, CA – The Hope International men's soccer team (11-3-3, 8-2-3 GSAC) for the first time since September won their third game in a row as they came from behind to defeat the Masters University Mustangs 4-2 on Thursday afternoon on the road in Santa Clarita, CA

Unlike the first meeting between the two teams that ended in a goalless draw this one was filled with goals as the Mustangs opened the scoring in the 2nd minute to make it 1-0. The Mustangs would keep pressing forward looking for more but the Royals defense held firm. The Royals then grew into the game and came up with the tying goal as Matthias Alcaraz banged a shot off the post that wound up right in the lap of Sebastian Ramirez who finished for his third of the season to tie the game 1-1 in the 17th minute. The Mustangs looked for a response but it was the Royals who took the lead as Cristian Carranza whipped in a corner kick that Diego Alvardo finished as they took a 2-1 lead in the 36th minute. The Royals then doubled their lead three minutes later as Berlin Torres played a long ball to Christian Hernadez who smashed home his first goal of the season to put the Royals up 3-1 in the 39th minute. Berlin Torres then came up with a late save to keep the Mustangs off the board as the Royals took a 3-1 halftime lead.

It didn't take long for the Mustangs to get back in the game as they pulled within 3-2 with a goal in the 50th minute. The Mustangs then seized the momentum and pushed for the equalizer forcing Torres into three saves in the span of six minutes. The game then changed in the final 20 minutes as the Royals went down a man after Braulio Morales received a second yellow card. The Royals defense then held on strong as they held the Mustangs to just three shots over the rest of the game with none on target. The Mustangs continued to push for the equalizer but it was the Royals who snatched a fourth goal in the closing minutes as Vincent Lopez fired home his fourth of the season to put the Royals up 4-2 in the 85th minute. The Royals then held on for a 4-2 win as they moved two points clear of Embry-Riddle (AZ) at the top of the standings. Torres played all 90 minutes in goal while recording 8 saves.

The Royals wrap up GSAC play at home as they host Embry-Riddle (AZ) on Saturday, November 2 at 4:00 PM at OC Great Park Field 18 in Irvine, CA
