Late Goal Leads to Tie With Firestorm

Glendale, AZ – The Hope International men's soccer team (8-3-3, 5-2-3 GSAC) couldn't hold the first half lead as they tied the Arizona Christian University Firestorm 1-1 on Friday afternoon on the road in Glendale, AZ.

The Royals came out on the attack to start the game but it was the Firestorm who had the best first chance to score on a counterattack breakaway but goalie Berlin Torres came up with a huge save to keep the game scoreless. The Royals then finally broke through as Andy Cabrera found a wide open Vincent Lopez who calmly finished for his third goal of the season to put the Royals up 1-0 in the 18th minute. The Firestorm looked for a response and had a flurry of opportunities in the closing minutes but once again Torres came up with two more great saves to deny the Firestorm. Torres had four saves as the Royals took a 1-0 lead at the half.

The Firestorm came out of halftime looking for the equalizer but the Royals defense survived the early pressure as Milton Herrera who had come in at goalie delivered two big saves. The Royals then pushed forward for more with their best chance coming in the 80th minute from Torres who had come into the field for the second straight game but this time he couldn't convert as it remained 1-0. The Firestorm then got the equalizer six minutes later as they made it 1-1 in the 86th minute. Both teams then settled for the draw as neither created a good chance to score. Herrera played the second half recording three saves.

The Royals continue GSAC play at home as they host Park-Gilbert on Thursday, October 24 at 7:00 PM at the OC Great Park Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, CA.
