Royals Can't Overcome Poor Start Fall 72-62 to No. 10 Lions

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (8-3) couldn't overcome a slow start as they dropped their GSAC regular season opener 72-62 to the No. 10 Vanguard University Lions on Thursday evening in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals got off to a poor start as the No. 10 ranked Lions raced out to a 10-0 advantage midway through the first. Madeleine Salud then stopped the run as she nailed a three to make it 10-3. The Lions would keep up the pressure as they went on to lead 16-8 but the Royals offense sparked to life and went on a 10-3 run led by six points from Salud to make it 19-18 with :59 seconds to go. The Lions would then answer with a bucket to take a 21-18 lead at the end of the first. It was a similar story in the second as the Royals came out flat while the Lions went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 30-18. The Royals would quickly answer with a Shailissa Jarrett three to make it 30-21 but the Lions had all the answers as they took a 35-23 lead with 3:47 to go. The Royals didn't give in as they pulled back with 39-32 at halftime with Salud draining a triple on their last possession.

The Lions continued their momentum into the third as they opened on an 11-0 run to extend their lead to 50-32 midway through the quarter. The Royals didn't give in as a pair of free throws from Shiane Talley started a 5-0 run as they pulled within 50-37. Salud then nailed her fifth three of the game as the Royals pulled within 52-40 at the end of the third. After the teams exchanged buckets to start the half the Royals went on an 8-2 run finished off by a big three from Talley to pull within 56-50. The Lions answered to make it 61-50 but the Royals kept coming as Salud nailed another three to make it 66-60 with :30 seconds left. The Lions held strong through as the Royals fell 72-62. Jarrett led the Royals with 22 points while Salud finished with a career-high 21 after going 7-for-11 from beyond the arc.

The Royals continue GSAC play as they will travel a short distance to San Dimas, CA to take on Life Pacific on Saturday, January 6 at 5:30 PM.
