Salud Leads With 18 As Royals Take Down Firestorm 81-73

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (12-5, 4-3 GSAC) won their third game in a row as they took down the Arizona Christian University Firestorm 81-73 on Saturday afternoon in the Darling Pavilion. 

The Royals got off to a quick start as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead off a Keira McNamee layup with 7:30 to go. The Firestom quickly responded as they took a 9-8 lead with 5:34 left. The Royals came right back with a layup from Shailissa Jarrett to take an 11-9 advantage. The Firestorm kept it close until the Royals ended the quarter on an 8-2 run led by six points from Madeleine Salud as they took a 22-14 lead at the end of the first. The Royals continued their momentum into the second as they started on a 9-2 run with six points from Shiane Talley to increase their advantage to 31-16. The Royals then extended their lead to 38-22 before going on a 13-0 run led by six points from Anyah Shamburger to increase their advantage to 51-22 with 2:05 to go. The Firestorm would finally find an answer as they narrowed the Royals advantage to 54-31 at halftime. The Royals lead was helped by impressive 70% shooting from three point land in the second quarter. 

Jarrett started off the second half with a layup to make it 56-31 but the Firestorm answered on an 11-3 run to pull within 59-42 midway through the quarter. Aliyah Gonzalez had an instant answer for the Royals as she nailed a three to make it 62-42 but the Firestorm kept coming as they narrowed the Royals advantage back to 69-53 at the end of the third. The Firestorm continued their momentum into the fourth as they started on an 8-0 run to pull within 69-61. The Royals regrouped after a timeout as Shamburger started a 6-0 run as the Royals stretched their lead back out to 75-61 with 5:50 remaining. The Firestorm once again got back within single digits but the Royals had all the answers as Salud nailed another three to make it 78-66 as the Royals went on to win 81-73. Salud led the Royals with 18 points.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host Life Pacific on Thursday, February 1 at 5:30 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
