Puente No Hitter, Tucker Shutout Leads Royals to Opening Day Sweep of Pioneers

Lancaster, CA – The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (2-0) swept their opening day doubleheader as they took down the University of Antelope Valley Pioneers 7-0 and 8-0 on Friday afternoon in Lancaster, CA.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (1-0) dazzled in her first start of the season throwing a no-hitter over six innings while striking out 13 and walking one. Kassie Puente led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with an RBI

The Royals gave Allie run support right away as they loaded the bases with two outs before Jazzy Smith pushed across a run on an error and another came home on a bases-loaded walk to Kassie Puente to put the Royals up 3-0 in the first. The Royals then added to their lead in the second as Samantha Villanueva brought home another run on a sac fly to make it 3-0.

Allie then kept the Pioneers at bay by striking out the side in the bottom of the second and recording five punchouts in a row. The Royals then added their lead in the fifth as they pushed across two more runs to go up 5-0. Ariana Coronado would then score in the sixth on a passed ball to make it 6-0. Meanwhile, Allie continued to hold the Pioneers off the bases recording two strikeouts as the game moved to the seventh.

The Royals struck again in the top of the seventh as Kassie Puente delivered a one out RBI single to push the Royals lead to 7-0. Makenna Stuart then came in to pitch the seventh putting the Pioneers down in order to seal the Royals shutout win.

 
Game 2:
Haley Tucker (1-0) picked up the win in her first start of the season pitching 6 ? shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out seven. Emma McCraw led the Royals offense going 2-for-2 with a home run.

After two scoreless innings, the Royals broke the deadlock in the third. The Royals put runners on second and third with two outs before Villanueva delivered an RBI groundout to make it 1-0. Emma McCraw then ripped a double to make it 2-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the fourth as they took advantage of an error and a single. Coronado then ripped a one out two-run single to increase the lead to 4-0.

Tucker continued to shut down the Pioneers as she put them down in order in the third and fourth. Tucker then got out of trouble in the bottom of the fifth as she allowed a two out double but got out of it after inducing a strikeout and a flyout to end the inning. The Royals offense then got back to work in the sixth as they made it 5-0 on a fielder's choice. Asia Chacon then brought home another run on a sac fly to push the advantage to 6-0. Tucker then worked around a lead off single to keep the game scoreless heading to the seventh. 

The Royals would add to their lead in the top of the seventh as McCraw blasted a lead off home run to make it 7-0. Then later in the inning Natalie Corrales delivered a one out RBI single to increase the Royals lead to 8-0. Stuart would then come in to get the final two outs as the Royals won in another shutout.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Westcliff in a doubleheader on Saturday, January 27 beginning at 11:00 AM at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA
