McCraw Leads Royals in Home Opener Split With Warriors

Fullerton, CA – The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (3-1) split their home opener doubleheader with the Westcliff University Warriors as they took game one 7-0 before dropping game two 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (2-0) picked up the win as she threw a shutout scattering two hits over six innings while walking two and striking out 10. Emma McCraw led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

After two scoreless innings the Royals got on the board in the bottom of the third as a dropped fly ball in right allowed McCraw to score and make it 1-0. Allie then pitched a 1-2-3 top of the fourth as the Royals then added to their lead in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and one out Samantha Villanueva drove in a run on an RBI groundout to make it 2-0. McCraw then ripped a two run single to center field to increase the Royals lead to 4-0.

The Warriors tried to get back in the game after a leadoff single in the fifth, but Allie came back to strike out the next two batters around a sac bunt to keep the game 4-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. With a runner in scoring position and one out Villanueva delivered an RBI single to make it 5-0 before then scoring on a wild pitch to make it 6-0. Sarah Reisler then drove in a run with a single to center to increase the lead to 7-0.

Makenna Stuart then came in from the bullpen and worked out of trouble getting the final Warriors batter to strikeout with two on to end the game and seal the Royals win.

Game 2:
Haley Tucker got the start and pitched four innings allowing three hits while walking two and striking out one. Allie Puente (2-1) took the loss in relief allowing just one unearned run on no hits while striking out two.

The Warriors threatened in the first as they put two runners on with two outs but Tucker induced a lineout to end the threat. The Royals then threatened in the bottom of the first getting two one with one out but were unable to cash in as Alyssa Castaneda lined into a double play. The Warriors threatened again in the third but Tucker got another lineout to end the threat. The Royals had another opportunity in the bottom of the fourth with two on and one out but once again were unable to cash in.

The Warriors finally got on the board in the fifth as they took advantage of an error to make it 1-0. The Royals offense continued to struggle but put together one last chance in the bottom of the seventh. With a runner on second and one out after an error and a sac bunt the Royals looked to tie the game but popped out and grounded out to end the game as they fell 1-0.

The Royals continue action on the road as they travel to Riverside, CA on Monday, January 29 to take on La Sierra with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM.
