Gonzalez and Jarrett Combine For 32 As Royals Down Spirit 78-54

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (11-5, 3-3 GSAC) won their second game in a row as they used a big second quarter to pull away from the OUAZ Spirit winning 78-54 on Thursday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion

It was a back-and-forth game to start the first quarter until the Royals went on a 9-3 run with back-to-back threes from Anyah Shamburger and Shailissa Jarrett putting them up 13-8 midway through the first. The Spirit though came right back to take the lead as they went up 17-16 with 2:32 to go. The Royals then answered as Aliyah Gonzalez drained a three to put the Royals back up 19-17. The Spirit would then tie the game before two free throws from Shiane Talley put them up 21-19 at the break. The Royals got off to a quick start in the second as they opened on a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 28-21 with Madeleine Salud knocking down a big three. The Royals then seized control from there as they pushed their lead to 45-29 capped off by another three from Jarrett with 1:38 to go. The Spirit would then score the final two baskets of the half as the Royals took a 45-33 lead at halftime.

The Royals continued their momentum out of the break as they opened on an 8-0 run finished off by a jumper from Gonzalez to increase their lead to 53-33 midway through the quarter. The Royals defense then stood tall allowing just six points in the quarter while the Royals offense closed the quarter on a 12-2 run led by eight points from Gonzalez as they took a 65-39 lead at the end of the third. The Royals then emptied their bench in the fourth as the teams exchanged points with the Royals going up 72-45 midway through the fourth on a layup by Payton Curtiss. Each player who came off the bench contributed points in the final quarter as the Royals won big 78-54. Shailissa Jarret and Aliyah Gonzalez led the way for the Royals with 16 points each.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host Arizona Christian on Saturday, January 27 at 12:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
