Talley Leads With a Double Double as Royals Upset Mustangs 70-68

Santa Clarita, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (10-5, 2-3 GSAC) pulled off a shocker on the road as they took down the Master's University Mustangs 70-68 on Saturday afternoon in Santa Clarita, CA.

The Royals got off to a fast start as they opened on a 7-2 run finished off by a layup from Talley. The Royals would then extend their lead to 13-4 with big threes from Madeline Salud and Shailissa Jarrett midway through the quarter. The Mustangs would answer to make it 15-9 before Amira Austin hit a layup at the buzzer to put the Royals up 17-9 at the end of the first. The Mustangs got off to a good start in the second as they opened on an 8-2 run to pull within 20-17. Talley answered with a layup but the Mustangs kept coming as they would take a 26-22 lead with 2:39 remaining. The Royals then answered to retake the lead on a Talley layup before the Mustangs came back to tie it 29-29 at halftime.

The Royals got right back to work in the third as they retook the lead as Casey Fust and Keira McNamee hit back to back threes to put them back up 41-35 lead with 7:27 to go. The Mustangs did not go down easily as they rallied to retake the lead at 49-46 with 1:33 remaining. Talley would then put the Royals back ahead as she scored the final seven points of the quarter including a late three to put the Royals back ahead 53-49 at the end of the third. After the Mustangs started the quarter to make it 53-51 the Royals would answer with a 5-0 run to go up 58-51. The Mustangs once again rallied to take a 59-58 lead midway through the quarter. The Royals called timeout and answered with a big layup by Fust followed by a dagger three to take a 63-59. The Royals then held on for a 70-68 win. Talley led the Royals with a double double (20 points, 15 rebounds)

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host OUAZ on Thursday, January 25 at 5:30 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
