Royals Can't Hang On To Late Lead Fall 85-70 to Warriors

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (9-5, 1-3 GSAC) couldn't hold a late lead as they fell 85-70 to the Jessup University Warriors on Saturday afternoon at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Warriors took an early 9-6 lead before the Royals answered with a huge 22-2 run off five three pointers led by nine points from Shailissa Jarret as they took a 28-11 lead with 2:58 remaining. The Warriors didn't give up as they closed the quarter on an 8-2 run as the Royals took a 30-19 lead at the end of the first. The Royals would extend their lead back to out to 38-24 after a layup from Mia Heidt and a big three from Shiane Talley with 6:44 to go. The Warriors then went on a 12-0 run to pull within 38-36 with 2:45 to go. Madeline Salud then nailed a three for the Royals as they went on to take a 45-38 lead at halftime.

The Royals started the third quarter strong as Talley three and a basket Casey Fust pushed the Royals advantage back to 50-38 with 8:57 remaining. The Royals then went cold from the field as the Warriors made it 53-48 with 3:48 to go. The Royals once again answered with baskets from Fust and Jarret to take a 58-48 lead with 2:58 to go. The Warriors once again battled back as the Royals led 61-57 at the end of the third. The Warriors continued their momentum into the fourth as they opened on a 6-0 run to take a 63-61 lead with 6:55 to go. Aliyah Gonzalez answered to tie it 63-63 but it was all Warriors from there as they seized a 69-63 lead. The Royals continued to stay close until several players fouled out as they fell 85-70. Jarrett led the Royals with 24 points.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they travel to Santa Clarita, CA to take on The Master's on Saturday, January 20 at 5:30 PM.
