Royals Down Oaks 90-73 To Win Second Ever GSAC Championship

Atherton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (24-7) used a big second half as they pulled away to defeat host Menlo College 90-73 to win the GSAC Tournament Championship for the second time in program history and punch their ticket to the NAIA Tournament on Saturday evening at Haynes Prim Pavilion in Atherton, CA.

After a tiring triple overtime win yesterday the Royals came out a little sluggish and the Oaks took advantage as they staked out with an early 10-2 lead. The Royals weren't about to give in though and came right back on an 11-2 run finished off by a big three from Shiane Talley to take their first lead 13-12. The Oaks would come right back to take the lead at 18-15 and from there the teams exchanged baskets as the Oaks took a 22-20 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was a battle as neither team managed to pull away with the score tied 30-30 midway through. The Royals then went on a 7-2 run to seize control and take a 37-32 lead. The Oaks wouldn't go away as they came back to tie it 37-37 before Ana Resendiz nailed a three with nine seconds left to put the Royals ahead 40-37 at halftime.

Shailissa Jarrett then hit a three to start the third quarter and put the Royals ahead 43-37 as they looked to take control. The Oaks had other ideas as they came back to make it 49-47 with 5:52 to go. The Royals weren't interested in allowing any comebacks as they took control with an 8-0 run led by six points from Talley as they took a 57-47 lead and went on to take a 65-58 lead at the end of the third. The Oaks put up a little fight in the fourth as they got within 65-60 but the Royals quickly answered to make it 68-60 on a Jarrett three. The Oaks continued to battle as they got within seven at 77-70 with 4:07 remaining. That was as close as they would get as Jeanette Fine laid it in to make it a 79-70 game as the Royals closed on a 13-3 run led by three straight threes by Resendiz as they won 90-73. It was the Royals first GSAC Tournament Championship since 2014. Talley led the Royals with 26 points.

After the game Head Coach Jessica Case said, "I'm just so proud of this team and their commitment to trust the process all season long. They showed great poise and grit in a tough environment against a very good Menlo team."

The Royals earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Tournament and will learn their seeding fate when the NAIA Selection show airs on Thursday, March 2 at 4:00 PM.
