Heidt Leads Royals With 22 Points in 69-53 Win Over Warriors

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (8-2) wrapped up the HIU Tournament with a dominant 69-53 win over the Waldorf University Warriors on Tuesday afternoon in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals got off to a good start as they took an early 6-2 lead with all points coming from Shailissa Jarrett. The Warriors got within 9-7 with 2:02 remaining but the Royals answered on an 8-2 run finished off by a layup from Mia Heidt to take a 17-9 lead. The Warriors would hit a late three to pull back to 17-12 at the end of the quarter. After the teams exchanged baskets to start the second the Royals exploded on an 16-3 run led by twelve points from Heidt to take a commanding 35-17 lead with 2:55 remaining. The Warriors continued to fight as they got back within 38-25 but Anyah Shamburger answered with a layup to put the Royals on top 40-25 at halftime.

The Warriors started the half with a bucket to make it 40-27 but the Royals didn't fold as they answered on a 10-0 run led by six points from Amira Austin to make it 50-27. The Warriors would get the Royals lead back down to 20 but once again the Royals closed the quarter strong as Shamburger nailed a three at the buzzer to put the Royals up 60-35 at the end of the quarter. The Royals emptied their bench in the fourth which allowed the Warriors to outscore the Royals 18-9 but it didn't matter as the Royals won 69-53. Heidt led the Royals with a career high 22 points off the bench.

The Royals return to action at home as they open up GSAC play against Vanguard on Thursday, January 4 at 5:30 PM in the Darling Pavilion
