Cohen's Late Penalty Sends Royals to GSAC Semifinals

Irvine, CA – The Hope International men's soccer team (14-3-1) opened play at the first round of the GSAC Tournament with a late 2-1 win over the Arizona Christian Firestorm on Saturday afternoon at the Championship Soccer Stadium in the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA.

The Royals dominated the first half as they put shot after shot on target but it wasn't until the 38th minute that they found the break through as Leo Perez whipped a ball across the box to Cristian Carranza who fired past the goalie for his second of the season to put the Royals on top 1-0. Meanwhile the Royals defense held strong against the Firestorm as they allowed just one shot on target with Goalie Milton Herrera needing just one easy save as they went into halftime up 1-0.

The Royals continued to push for more goals to start the second but a goal line clearance by the Firestorm prevented Perez from doubling the lead moments into the half. The Firestorm then grew into the game and found the equalizer in the 64th minute to tie it 1-1. From there both teams searched for the winner and it was the Royals who found it from the spot as Colm Cohen was dragged down in the box with just about three minutes to go. Cohen then calmly stepped up and buried the penalty for his third goal of the season to make it 2-1 in the 87th minute. The Firestorm had a late chance to tie it but came up empty as the Royals emerged victorious. Herrera played all 90 minutes in goal and had three saves.

With the win the Royals advance to take on second seeded Vanguard in the GSAC Semifinals on Thursday, November 9 at 11:00 AM at Menlo College in Atherton, CA.
