Royals Stun Lions on Penalties to Advance to GSAC Championship

Atherton, CA – The Hope International men's soccer team (14-3-2) came from behind and won a thrilling game on penalty kicks 1-1 (4-3) to upset the Vanguard University Lions and advance to the GSAC Finals on Thursday afternoon at Menlo College in Atherton, CA.

Unlike in their first meeting it was the Royals who came out with all the energy as they created multiple chances with Angel Magdaleno forcing three saves by the Lions. It was the Lions though who found the breakthrough in the 21st minute off a corner kick as they took a 1-0 lead. The Royals continued to create chances as Anthony Acosta hit the post in the 28th minute but the Royals were unable to break the Lions defense as they went into halftime down 1-0.

The Lions settled in defensively to start the second half as they prevented the Royals from creating many chances. The Royals also didn't allow much from the Lions as they game remained 1-0. Then with a little more than 10 minutes left in the game Colm Cohen was dragged down just outside the penalty box to give the Royals a golden opportunity. Luis Lira then stepped up and scored a lazer free kick, his second goal of the season to tie it 1-1 in the 78th minute. The Royals then had a late chance to win it but could not finish as the game headed to overtime.

The Royals created the best chance in the first overtime period as Braulio Morales put a header on target but it was saved by the Lions keeper. The Lions then had the best opportunities in the second overtime as they hit the post and forced Milton Herrera to come up with a big save as the game headed to penalties. Then in penalties with the score tied 3-3 Herrera came up with a huge save to set up Jesse Mancilla who buried his opportunity to give the Royals a 4-3 win to stun the defending GSAC Champions in penalty kicks.

The Royals advance to the GSAC Championship game for the second time where they will take on the fourth seeded The Master's University Mustangs at 1:00 PM at Menlo College in Atherton, CA.
