Royals Fall to Oaks In Another Close One 71-68

Atherton, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (15-5, 8-3 GSAC) lost another nail bitter as they fell 71-68 to the Menlo College Oaks on Saturday afternoon in Atherton, CA.

The game between two of the top four teams in the GSAC lived up to expectations as it was a fight to the end. It was a back and forth game as the Royals got out to an early 5-2 lead on a layup by Shiane Talley but the Oaks came right back to take a 9-7 lead. From there the teams exchanged leads before the Oaks closed out the quarter on a 10-0 run as the Royals trailed 23-15 at the end of the first. The Oaks continued their momentum into the second as they extended their lead to 28-19 midway through the second. The Royals continued to fight as they cut the lead to 32-27 but the Oaks responded as they took a 36-29 halftime lead.

The Royals regrouped at halftime and came out firing as they used a 13-2 run finished off by a three from Talley to put the Royals up 42-38. After an Oaks basket the Royals went on a 7-2 run with five coming from Jeanette Fine as they extended their lead to 49-42. The Oaks though answered with a 12-0 run as they took a 54-49 lead at the end of the third. The Oaks continued their momentum into the fourth as the extended their lead to 60-51. The Royals didn't give up though and battled back to get within three twice including on a layup by Fine with :54 seconds left. The Royals then had a chance to tie but couldn't convert as they fell in another close one 71-68.

The Royals will return to action at home on Thursday, January 26 at 5:30 PM as they host OUAZ in the Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, CA.
