Talley's Game Winning Layup Helps Royals Stun No. 13 Lions 69-67

Costa Mesa, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (14-3, 7-1 GSAC) used a late basket to stun the No. 13 Vanguard University Lions 69-67 on Thursday evening at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA.

The game between two of the top three teams in the GSAC lived up to expectations as it was a fight to the end. The Royals took advantage in the first as they took an early 9-6 lead midway through the quarter. Then they went on a 9-3 run finished off by a three from Ana Resendiz to take an 18-9 lead. The Lions would strike back with the final two points as the Royals led 18-11 at the end of the first. The Lions kept up the pressure in the second as they opened up the quarter on a 10-2 run to retake the lead at 21-20. Resendiz would then hit back to back threes to put the Royals back up but the Lions came right back to take a 37-33 lead. Resendiz would answer again for the Royals with a big three before the half as the Royals trailed 37-36 at halftime.

The Royals reestablished themselves to start the third as they started on a 14-5 run led by eight points from Resendiz as they retook a 51-41 lead. The Lions would manage to get back within eight but Resendiz scored the final basket of the quarter to put the Royals up 59-49 at the end of the third. The Lions would come storming back to start the fourth as they went on an 11-0 run to retake the lead at 60-59. From there it was tight as the Lions held a 67-65 lead with 3:10 left. Needing someone to step up the Royals found Shiane Talley as she scored with :41 seconds left to tie the game 67-67 and then just one possession later she laid it in again with :05 seconds left to give the Royals a 69-67 win. Resendiz led the team with 29 points while Talley added 20.

The Royals will return to action at home on Saturday, January 14 at 5:30 PM as they host Life Pacific in the Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, CA.
