Royals Open Season With Tough Overtime Loss to Pioneers

Lancaster, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (0-1) opened their season with a tough 80-79 overtime loss to the University of Antelope Valley on Saturday night in Lancaster, CA.

It was the Pioneers who got off to a quick start as they took an early 5-0 lead before going on to take a 10-5 advantage midway through the first quarter. Anya Shamburger then hit back to back threes for the Royals as they closed back within 12-11. The Royals continued to keep it close throughout the quarter but the Pioneers hit a late three to take a 22-19 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Pioneers continued their momentum into the second quarter as they went on a 7-0 run to take a 29-19 lead midway through the second. The Royals battled back as they closed within 31-28 and then 34-31 on a layup by Casey Fust, but the Pioneers hit a three pointer at the buzzer to take a 37-31 lead into halftime.

The Pioneers continued to extend their lead in the third as they outscored the Royals 23-18 to take a 60-49 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Royals fought back in the third quarter as they opened on a 10-6 run to get within 66-59. Then they went on a 8-0 run to take the lead at 67-66 led by four points from Jeneatte Fine. Shailissa Jarrett then came up with a big layup to give the Royals a 69-67 lead with :43 seconds left but the Pioneers hit two late free throws to tie the game 69-69 and force overtime. The Royals seized the momentum in overtime as they got out to a 76-71 lead on a layup by Fine with 2:15 left. It was the Pioneers to stage a comeback though as they tied the game at 77-77. Then with :28 seconds left Fust scored to give the Royals the lead at 79-77 but the Pioneers hit a few late free throws as the Royals fell 80-79 in overtime. Fine led the Royals with 28 points.

The Royals return to action with their home opener as they take on Bethesda on Monday, October 31 at 5:30 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
