Men’s Soccer Battles to 1-1 Tie at La Sierra

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Hope International men's soccer began GSAC action with a 1-1 tie at La Sierra on Tuesday, getting a goal from Erick Cabrera in the 68th minute.

In a physical game that featured 37 fouls and several yellow cards, Cabrera gave the Royals a 1-0 lead at the 67:23 mark as his 30-foot shot from the right side beat La Sierra goalie Abraham Perez to the near post.

The Golden Eagles knotted the contest at 1-1 less than five minutes later. Vinicius Goncalves dropped off a short pass to Daniel Garcia, who hit a strike inside the far post.

HIU played the final 18 minutes down one man as leading scorer Matthias Alcaraz was whistled for his second yellow card just seconds after the Garcia equalizer.

The Royals outshot the Golden Eagles 3-2 down the stretch despite playing at the man disadvantage.

Sophomore Wyatt Schaap posted two saves for the Royals, while Perez had three.

Cabrera had a team-high four shots with three of those on frame.

The Royals return to action on Thursday against Soka in the GSAC home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the OC Great Park Stadium.
