Powell, Aguilar Earn GSAC Major Awards

Hope International highlighted its inaugural season of flag football with GSAC major award recipients, as freshman Madison Powell earned Player of the Year and Felipe Aguilar Coach of the Year.

The GSAC also announced the All-Conference Team, presented by Under Armour, and five Royals landed on the list. In addition to Powell, freshmen Anahi Morales, Ja'Niya Haley, Nicole Cruz and Samantha Myers were honored by the conference.

Powell was the ultimate two-way player for the Royals, earning all-conference as both a wide receiver and defensive back. She tallied 57 receptions for 639 yards and 13 touchdowns offensively, while posting 48 total tackles, eight tackles for loss and two interceptions on defense.

Aguilar constructed a GSAC championship force in his first year leading the program. The Royals finished 13-2 overall, including a current 12-game win streak, and dominated GSAC play with a 10-0 record. Fourteen of the 18 players on the roster are freshmen, signaling that HIU's program is on solid upper trajectory for years to come.

Morales was the architect of the HIU offense. The quarterback completed 153 of 225 passes, a 68.0 percent success rate, for 1,622 yards and 24 touchdowns. She earned the GSAC Offensive Player of the Week award twice, while also rushing 48 times for 162 yards and five touchdowns.

Haley earned dual roles on the all-conference team as both a running back and defensive back. The Sacramento native rushed 34 times for 185 yards and two touchdowns, while catching an additional 23 balls for 148 yards on offense. On defense, she posted 31 tackles and added a team-high five interceptions.

Cruz claimed her spot on the all-conference team as a center. The Calexico, Calif. native finished second on the team with 50 catches for 351 yards and one touchdown grab.

Hailing from Whittier, Myers was selected as a rusher, posting 25 tackles, five sacks and eight tackles for loss.

The Royals earned the No. 1 seed in the inaugural GSAC Championship in Glendale, Ariz. They play No. 4 seed Simpson on Thursday in one semifinal matchup at the Arizona Cardinals Flag Football Campus, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
