Men’s Volleyball Cruises in Park Gilbert Sweep

FULLERTON – Hope International hit .311 in a dominating 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 men's volleyball sweep of Park Gilbert on Saturday at Darling Pavilion.

Alessandro Spendolini and Jah'mi Jeter had a match-high tying 15 kills – combining for 30 of the team's 38 kills – as the Royals won their third contest by sweep this season.

Spendolini hit .371 (15-2-35) and added 10 digs, securing his eighth double-double of the season. Jeter dug a career-high and match-high 19 balls to collect his first career double-double.

In the back row, Hugo Gonzalez Gutierrez scooped up 15 digs and Sam D'Ambrosio handed out 26 assists.

Dominic Smith led the Buccaneers with seven kills.

The Royals are now 6-14 overall and 4-6 in the GSAC. The Buccaneers dropped to 5-13 overall and 2-7 in conference action.

HIU turned an early set one 6-5 deficit into a 12-8 lead courtesy of a 7-2 run, as Spendolini teamed with Sean Seaman and Travis Donahue on a pair of block assists.

The Royals scored five straight points to extend the advantage to 17-9 as Jeter finished the run with back-to-back kills.

Spendolini accounted for four of the last seven HIU points in the set, pounding one down on set point for the 25-15 victory.

HIU hit .308 (12-4-26) in set one, while Park Gilbert swung at a .033 (8-7-30) clip.

In set two, the teams were tied 6-6 when the Royals took off on a 5-0 run, capped off by two Spendolini kills. Two more Spendolini slams extended the lead to 15-8. HIU remained in command at 18-11, but the Buccaneers reeled off five straight points to pull within two, prompting a Royals timeout.

HIU seized back the momentum with a 4-0 run, helped by an Antonio ace and Seaman kill. Spendolini, who had six kills in the set, notched back-to-back kills to cement the 25-18 victory.

The Royals hit .414 (14-2-29) in set three to earn the 25-17 win. HIU used a pair of 4-0 runs to build leads of 9-6 and 16-12. Two Jeter kills helped HIU build a 20-14 cushion, and two more Spendolini kills sandwiched around an Antonio putaway got the home team to match point at 24-15.

A Buccaneer attack error sealed the match for the Royals.

HIU heads out on the road to face No. 1 The Master's on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in The MacArthur Center.
