Women’s Basketball Sends Out Seniors in Style

FULLERTONAmira Austin collected 22 points and 13 rebounds to highlight Senior Day festivities on Saturday at Darling Pavilion, leading the Hope International women's basketball team to a 70-50 victory over Embry-Riddle.

The Royals moved to 20-4 on the season, securing the program's sixth overall 20-win campaign and second under head coach Jessica Case. HIU is now 13-1 in the Great Southwest Athletic Conference and remains in a tie for first place with The Master's. ERAU fell to 7-17 overall and 4-10 in conference action.

Both HIU and TMU head to Arizona next week to complete the GSAC regular season schedule. Both teams play Park Gilbert. The Mustangs also take on Benedictine Mesa, while the Royals face OUAZ.

HIU celebrated five seniors in a pregame ceremony, including Austin, Dre Javier, Liz Cota, Trasara Alexander and Aliyah Gonzalez.

Austin's double-double was her 12th this season. She hit the 20-point mark for the sixth time and has corralled double-digit rebounds in 15 games. She had a dominant game, shooting 10 of 14 from the floor while adding three blocked shots and a steal.

Nicole Chuang tallied 14 points off the bench as she knocked down four three-pointers.

Gonzalez contributed 13 points on 4 of 8 shooting to go along with two assists and a block. Natalie Acuna scored nine points in just 15 minutes of action.

Embry-Riddle trailed 14-9 in the early going, but ended the first quarter on an 11-0 run to lead by six. The Royals fell behind by as many as 10 points as two Katie McBride free throws opened up a 24-14 ERAU lead.

HIU went without a field goal for the first five minutes of the second period, but Gonzalez scored eight of her team's next 10 points as the Royals took a 25-24 lead. Chuang canned a triple to top off a 14-0 run as HIU led 28-24.

Chuang bombed in another triple, and a three-point play by Acuna extended HIU's lead to 34-26, completing a 20-2 run. HIU settled for a six-point lead at the break.

ERAU got as close as 38-34 on Jordyn Smith's layup with 7:04 remaining in the third quarter, but another huge HIU run – this one 11-0 – opened up a 49-34 cushion. Acuna had six straight points during the run as the Royals were in command.

HIU eventually led by as many as 25 points as Alexander swished a three to make it 65-40. Cota also got in on the action with a three in the fourth quarter.

The Royals meet Park Gilbert on Thursday, February 19 at 4:30 p.m.
