Reisler Helps Royals Stay Alive at NAIA Tournament with Win Over Yotes

Ashland, OR - The No. 20 Hope International University softball team (37-14) bounced back as they came from behind to eliminate the College of Idaho Yotes 6-3 at the NAIA Opening Round on Wednesday afternoon in Ashland, OR.

Kaitlyn Maaske (18-5) picked up the win pitching a complete game 7 innings allowing three runs on ten hits while walking three and striking out three. Sarah Reisler led the Royals offense going 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

It was a tough start for the Royals as the Yotes struck for three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead with two outs. Vivian Little came up with a huge play to limit the damage as she threw out a Yotes player attempting to score another run to end the inning. The Royals fed off that momentum as Maaske proceeded to shut down the Yotes offense over the final six innings.

The Royals would then come racing back as Emma McCraw ripped an RBI double to left center to make it 3-1 in the bottom of the third. Little then continued her hot tournament with a clutch two out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull the Royals within 3-2. The Royals then tied the game in the fifth as Alyssa Cataneda delivered an RBI single with nobody out to tie it 3-3. The Royals then took their first lead as Samanth Villanueva laid down a bunt that led to an error to make it 4-3. The Royals then added on Reisler ripped her third double of the day down the left field line to increase the Royals lead to 6-3.

The Yotes looked for an answer but Maaske held firm working around a walk and a single in the top of the sixth and a hit batter in the top of the seventh to seal the win for the Royals as they advanced to the NAIA Opening Round Championship game.

The Royals will next take on No. 4 Southern Oregon on Thursday, May 15 at 11:00 AM and will need to beat them twice to advance to their first ever NAIA World Series.
