No. 18 Royals Complete Four Game Sweep of Buccaneers

Mesa, AZ - The No. 18 Hope International University softball team (29-7, 12-4 GSAC) completed a four game sweep of the Park University Gilbert Arizona Buccaneers as they swept a doubleheader winning 12-2 and 6-4 on Saturday on the road at AZ Athletic Grounds in Mesa, AZ.

Game 1:
Kaitlyn Maaske (14-2) picked up her 14th win throwing a complete game 4 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three. Sarah Reisler led the Royals offense going 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a home run.

The Royals jumped on top in the top of the first as Emma McCraw ripped a one out RBI double to put the Royals up 1-0. Two batters later Samantha Villanueva came through with a two run single to increase the Royals lead to 3-0. The Buccaneers would get a run back in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1 but the Royals came right back in the top of the second. Reisler led things off crushing her first home run of the season to right field to make it 4-1. Later in the inning McCraw ripped her second RBI double of the game to give the Royals a 5-1 lead. Villanueva then delivered an RBI groundout to put the Royals up 6-1. 

The Royals then added to their lead in the top of the third as Vivian Little came through with a one out RBI single to left to make it 7-1. Then with two outs Asia Chacon drove in two more runs on a single to right to give the Royals a 9-1 lead. The Buccaneers would answer to make it 9-2 in the bottom of the third but the Royals weren't done scoring as they added more in the top of the fourth. The Royals would load the bases with one out for Lillian Hernandez who delivered an RBI single to make it 10-2. Reisler would then walk before Little delivered an RBI single to push the Royals lead to 12-2. Maaske then shut down the Buccaneers as the Royals won 12-2 by run rule in five innings.

Game 2:
Grace Craig (4-0) picked up her fourth win pitching 4 1/3 innings allowing four runs, three earned on five hits while striking out three. Alexis Galvan picked up her second save pitching the final 2 2/3 innings allowing just two hits while striking out four. Amanda Esquivel led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third when the Royals broke the game open. The Royals would strike for six runs with two outs as Asia Chacon got things started with an RBI single to center to put the Royals up 1-0. Breanna Lucero then came through with an RBI single and then Chacon would score on a wild pitch to give the Royals a 3-0 lead. Amanda Esquivel then delivered a two run single to right to make it 5-0. Makenna Stuart then ripped an RBI double down the left field line as the Royals took a 6-0 lead. 

The Buccaneers didn't give up as they pulled back two runs in the bottom of the third to make it 6-2. They would then claw their way back into the game as they got a run each in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to pull within 6-4. Galvan then came in from the bullpen getting two groundouts to end the bottom of the fifth. Galvan then shut down the Buccaneers as she put them down in order in the bottom of the seventh to pick up her second save and seal a 6-4 win.

The Royals continue action at home with a big matchup against No. 8 Georgia Gwinnett on Tuesday, April 8 with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM at Fullerton College in Fullerton, CA.
