No. 3 Royals Finish off Spirit Eliminate Mustangs to Advance to GSAC Championship

Mesa, AZ - The No. 3 Hope International University baseball team (41-8) bounced back from their surprising loss in the first game as they finished off the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit 12-4 to wrap up yesterday's game and then followed that with a 5-2 victory over the Master's University Mustangs on Tuesday to stay alive at the GSAC Championships at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, AZ.

Game 1:
Josh Landry (10-0) picked up his 10th win pitching 5 innings allowing four runs, three earned on eight hits while walking one and striking out two. Matthew Pinal picked up his first save pitching 4 shutout innings allowing just two hits while striking out four. Pinal also led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a home run.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the second when the Royals offense got going with Amari Bartee crushing his team leading 14th home run, a three run shot to right center to put the Royals up 3-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the top of the third as Pinal launched his ninth home run of the season off the right fielder's glove and over the wall to increase the Royals lead to 5-0.

Landry held the Spirit scoreless through the first two innings but the Spirit would strike back to make it 5-3 in the bottom of the third. The Royals offense answered in the top of the fourth as they took advantage of an error before a sac fly by Julian Francois increased their lead to 6-3. Landry then retired the Spirit in order in the bottom of the fourth while the Royals offense kept hitting with Spencer Davis ripped a one out RBI single to put the Royals up 7-3.

The Spirit would then get a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-4. Once again the Royals got more run support in the top of the sixth as Mario Tostado crushed his eighth home run of the season to increase the Royals lead to 9-3. Later in the inning Pinal then came through with a one out RBI single to push the Royals advantage to 9-4. The power then went out in the bottom of the sixth leading to a delay before the game was postponed until the next day.

When the game resumed on Tuesday morning the Royals turned to Pinal who completely shut down the Spirit offense. The Royals also added more runs as David Shackelford forced an error in the top of the eighth to make it 10-4. The Royals offense wasn't done as Tostado and Francois came through with RBI singles in the top of the ninth to increase the Royals lead to 12-4. Pinal then finished things off in the ninth retiring the final eight batters in order to seal the win.

Game 2:
Jesus Munguia (7-2) picked up his seventh win of the season as he turned in one of his best starts of the season pitching 6 innings allowing just two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out seven. Mario Tostado picked up his first save turning in his most dominant and longest performance of the season pitching 3 no hit innings while walking two and striking out three. Josiah Chavez led the offense going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

The game was a pitcher's duel as both teams fought to stay alive. It was the Royals who would break through first in the bottom of the second as Brandon Chun-Ming led off the inning with a walk and would score on a wild pitch to put the Royals up 1-0. Munguia then put the Mustangs down in order in the top of the third while the Royals struck again in the bottom of the third. This time Chun-Ming and Chavez both delivered two out RBI singles to increase the Royals lead to 3-0. The Mustangs would finally answer off Munguia with a two run home run in the top of the fourth to pull within 3-2. Then with two outs and the bases loaded Munguia struck out the GSAC home run leader to keep the Royals ahead.

Munguia would then shut down the Mustangs over the next inning retiring six of the seven batters he faced while the Royals added to their lead. With two on and one out in the bottom of the sixth Amari Bartee delivered a sac fly to make it 4-2. Tostado then came in from the bullpen to shut down the Mustangs while Chavez delivered his second RBI single of the game in the bottom of the seventh to increase the Royals lead to 5-2. The Mustangs didn't give up as they put a runner on first with one out in the top of the ninth but Tostado induced an inning ending double play to seal the Royals win and eliminate the Mustangs.

With the win the Royals advance to the GSAC Championship game where they will take on No. 16 Arizona Christian on Wednesday, April 30 at 11:00 AM at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, AZ. The Royals will have to win twice to win the tournament. Head Coach Larry Mahoney also became the winningest baseball coach in HIU history picking up his 162nd victory.
