Zavala Records Nine Kills in Royals sweep against Buccaneers

Gilbert, AZ - The Hope International University Men's Volleyball team (9-4, 1-1 GSAC) defeated the Buccaneers of Park University Gilbert (1-9, 0-2 GSAC) 3-0 on Saturday evening in Gilbert, AZ. 

With a quick turnaround from last nights loss, the Royals traveled to Gilbert, AZ to face the Buccaneers of Park University. The match was off to a quick start as both teams got on the board quite early. A kill by Cole Oliver assisted by Kyler Tufuga gave the Royals a lead early in the set. Despite the Buccaneers comfort on home court, the Royals continued to push through and keep the game close. A service ace by Zach Nicoletti gave the Royals a four point lead nearing the end of the set. The Royals continued to build off of this lead with consecutive kills by Coby Prowse, Julian Zavala and Kyler Tufuga, two of which were assisted by Cole Oliver. The set ended with a service ace by Julian Zavala to give the Royals a win for the first set with a score of 25-15. 

With the second set underway, the Royals looked to keep their momentum from the first set. Again, the Royals earned their lead early with the help of Coby Prowse and Damon Potter, each earning kills assisted by Kyler Tufuga. The Buccaneers attempted to break through the Royals defense, but their efforts were no match for the Royals. With the Royals now up six, Cole Oliver earned a service ace giving the Royals a seven point lead. The Buccaneers called a time out looking to stop the momentum the Royals. Despite the Buccaneers efforts to stop the Royals, they continued to break through the defense of the Buccaneers. Nearing the end of the set, Coby Prowse got a kill assisted by Kyler Tufuga, Tufuga then delivered a service ace ending the set 25-21. 

The third and final set of the match was off to a great start for the Royals. The Royals made a statement early and took a four point lead over the Buccaneers. A kill by Sean Seaman assisted by Kyler Tufuga put the Royals up five. With the Royals gaining even more momentum, the Royals went on to score three points in a row with two kills one by Cole Oliver and the other by Julian Zavala followed by a service ace by Cole Oliver. The Buccaneers went on to find gaps in the Royals defense but their efforts were no match for the Royals. The Royals went on to end the third and final set, 25-14 to win 3-0.
