Oliver Leads Royals to Five Set Thriller Win Over Spirit

Fullerton, CA - The No. 14 Hope International men's volleyball team (10-4, 4-1 GSAC) won a five set thriller 3-2 over the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit ending a nine game losing streak to them dating back to 2019 on Friday evening at home in Darling Pavilion.

The Spirit pulled out to a 17-11 advantage in the first set. The Royals answered on a 5-1 run led by back to back kills from Kyler Tufuga to pull within 18-16. The Spirit answered well as they rebounded to take a 22-18 lead. The Royals quickly turned the set around as they finished on a 7-1 run led by two kills each from Cole Oliver and Julian Zavala and a Sam D'Ambrosio service ace to seal a 25-23 set win and a 1-0 lead. The Royals looked to build on their lead in the second set as they opened on a 3-1 run before taking a 9-8 lead off a kill by Zavala. The Spirit would answer to go up 16-13 but the Royals kept ahead with three more kills from Oliver and ace from Tufuga to retake a 17-16 advantage. The Royals would go on to lead 23-22 with another kill by Oliver but this time the Spirit closed out the set winning 25-23 and tying the game 1-1.

The Royals looked to bounce back in the third set as they took a 14-9 lead with more kills from Oliver. The Spirit tried to regroup after a timeout but it was all Royals as they went on a 6-2 run with four more kills from Oliver to extend their lead to 21-14. The Spirit would call another timeout but the Royals had all the momentum as they closed out the set with a block by Danny Helou and Damon Potter to win 25-16 and take a 2-1 lead. The Royals looked to close out the game in the fourth set as they took an early 7-3 lead with kills from Oliver and Damon Potter. The Spirit had other ideas as they rallied to tie it 9-9. The Royals answered with a 3-0 run to go up 12-9 with a kill and ace from Oliver. That didn't stop the Spirit though as they seized control going on to lead 19-13. The Royals didn't concede as a Tufuga set up Potter for another kill to make it 21-18 but the Spirit closed out the set winning 25-20 to tie the game 2-2.

The Spirit took the momentum into the fifth set as they opened on a 6-1 run but the Royals came storming back to tie it 6-6 led by two more kills from Oliver. The Spirit responded to go up 12-9 but the Royals rallied to make it 12-11 off another Oliver kill. The Spirit would go back up 14-11 and have match point but the Royals weren't about to lose at home as they finished the game off on a 7-2 run with back to back kills from Sean Seman and Oliver giving the Royals an 18-16 win and a 3-2 victory. Oliver led the Royals with 32 kills and Tufuga led with 54 assists.
