No. 12 Royals Split With Firestorm to Open GSAC Play

Glendale, AZ - The No. 12 Hope International University softball team (11-3) opened up GSAC play with a doubleheader split against the Arizona Christian University Firestorm as they fell 8-5 before bouncing back to win 5-2 on Friday evening on the road in Glendale, AZ.

Game 1:
Alexis Galvan (2-2) took the loss pitching 3 1/3 innings allowing five runs on five hits while walking four and striking out two. Asia Chacon led the Royals offense going 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Royals struck first in the top of the first as Emma McCraw delivered a one out RBI single through the right side to make it 1-0. The Firestorm quickly tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the first. The Royals would retake the lead 2-1 in the top of the second as Lily Hernandez grounded into a double play. The Firestorm would then tie it 2-2 in the bottom of the second. The Firestorm then broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.

The Royals looked for an answer in the top of the fifth and got it from Chacon who came up clutch with a two out two run triple to left center to pull the Royals within 5-4. The Firestorm answered in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 6-4 and then would tack on two more in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-4. The Royals looked to rally in the top of the seventh as the Royals loaded the bases with one out. Gabriella Holmes then singled up the middle to make it 8-5 but the next batter then grounded into a fielder's choice double play to end the game.

Game 2:
Kaitlyn Maaske (6-1) got the start and picked up her sixth win throwing a complete game 7 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five. Alyssa Castaneda and Amanda Esquivel led the Royals offense with two RBIs each.

The Royals jumped on top again in the top of the first as Castaneda ripped a two out two run double down the left field line to put the Royals up 2-0. Maaske meanwhile shutdown the Firestorm over the first three innings while the Royals added to their lead in the top of the fourth with a one out RBI single by Karlie Bilbrey to make it 3-0.

The Firestorm finally got to Maaske in the bottom of the fourth as they made it 3-1. Maaske would then come back to end the threat getting back to back groundouts to limit the damage. The Royals then extended their lead in the top of the fifth as Esquivel ripped a two out two run double to left to increase the Royals lead to 5-1. The Firestorm would make it 5-2 in the fifth but that's all Maaske would allow as the Royals won 5-2.

The Royals wrap up their GSAC series with Arizona Christian with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 8 beginning at 10:00 AM in Glendale, AZ.
