No. 12 Royals Drop GSAC Opening Series to Firestorm

Glendale, AZ - The No. 12 Hope International University softball team (11-5, 1-3 GSAC) dropped their first GSAC series of the season against the Arizona Christian University Firestorm as they fell 5-4 and 3-1 on Saturday afternoon on the road in Glendale, AZ.

Game 1:
Alexis Galvan (2-3) took the loss pitching 6 innings allowing five runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out six. Asia Chacon led the Royals offense going 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The Firestorm opened the scoring in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Royals looked for an answer but it would be the Firestorm who scored again in the bottom of the third to make it 3-0. Galvan would bounce back to strikeout the final Firestorm batter to end the inning.

The Royals finally struck back in the top of the fourth as they made it 3-2 with an RBI single by Amanda Esquivel followed by a Lily Hernandez fielder's choice. The Royals would then take the lead in the top of the fifth as Chacon ripped an RBI double down the right field line to tie the game 3-3. Natalie Corrales then delivered a sac fly to put the Royals ahead 4-3.

This time the Firestorm answered as they score two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Down to their final three outs the Royals looked for an answer in the top of the seventh but were unable to do anything with runners on second a third and two down as they fell 5-4.

Game 2:
Kaitlyn Maaske (6-2) picked up the loss pitching 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs on 11 hits while walking one and striking out two.

The Royals opened the scoring in the top of the first as Alyssa Castaneda came through with a one out RBI single through the left side to put the Royals up 1-0. Maaske held the Firestorm off the board through the first three innings but they finally got to her in the bottom of the third as they took a 3-1 lead.

The Royals didn't give up as they loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth but they were unable to cash in as they continued to trail. The Royals had one last chance in the top of the seventh as they got two walks with two outs but once again were unable to find the big hit as they fell 3-1.
