Galvan and Maaske Brilliant in Sweep of Eagles

Fullerton, CA - The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (22-6, 7-3 GSAC) picked up two big wins as they started a four game series sweeping their GSAC home opening doubleheader against the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles winning 4-1 and 1-0 at home at Fullerton College in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Alexis Galvan (6-4) picked up her sixth win as she threw a complete game 7 innings allowing one run, none earned on four hits while walking three and striking out four. Emma McCraw led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Eagles jumped on top in the top of the first as they took advantage of an error to take a 1-0 lead. That's all they would get though as Galvan got a popout to work out of the jam. The Royals offense then came to life in the bottom of the third as they got five singles in a row as Vivian Little tied the game 1-1 on an RBI single. McCraw then ripped an RBI single into center to put the Royals ahead 2-1. Alyssa Castaneda and Samantha Villanueva then joined the hit party with singles as the Royals took a 4-1 lead.

The Eagles looked for an answer but Galvan retired 12 of them in a row to keep them off the board. The Eagles would then get a pair of walks in the top of the sixth but Galvan was up to the task inducing two groundouts to end the inning. The Eagles then started the top of the seventh with a double but Galvan wasn't about to allow any more runs as she got two huge strikeouts and a groundout to end the game and seal the win.

Game 2:
Kaitlyn Maaske (11-2) picked up her 11th win throwing a complete game 7 inning shutout allowing just three hits while striking out four. Villanueva led the Royals offense driving in the winning run.

The game was a pitcher's duel throughout but the Royals had a great chance to score in the bottom of the first as they loaded the bases with nobody out. The Royals were unable to take advantage as they ran into an unfortunate double play and came away with nothing. Maaske meanwhile shutdown the Eagles putting them down in order in the 2nd, 3rd and 5th innings.

The Royals would then take the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Lily Hernandez singled, stole second and would score on a perfect bunt play by Villanueva to put the Royals up 1-0. Maaske then shutdown the Eagles working around an error to get a strikeout looking to end the game and seal the victory.

The Royals wrap up their GSAC series against the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Arizona Eagles with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 29 at 12:00 PM at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA.
