Maaske Leads No. 19 Royals to Split with Division II Lions

Costa Mesa, CA - The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (20-6) split a doubleheader with the NCAA Division II Vanguard University Lions as they dropped the first game 4-0 before coming back to win the second 3-2 in 8 innings on Wednesday evening on the road in Costa Mesa, CA

Game 1:
Alexis Galvan (5-4) got the start and took the loss pitching 6 innings allowing four runs on four hits while walking four and striking out four. Samantha Villanueva led the Royals offense going 1-for-2.

The Lions got to Galvan early as they took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Royals looked for a response as Villanueva led off the top of the third with a single but the Royals weren't able to cash in as they continued to trail. The Lions would then add one more run each in the fifth and the sixth innings as the Royals trailed 4-0.

The Royals tried to fight back as Emma McCraw led off the top of the seventh with a single but that's all the Royals would get as they fell 4-0.

Game 2:
Kaitlyn Maaske (10-2) picked up her 10th win throwing a complete game 8 innings allowing two runs on eight hits while walking seven and striking out two. Villanueva led the Royals offense driving in the winning run.

The second game of the day was another pitcher's duel with the Lions taking an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Royals finally found a response to the Lions pitching as Lilly Hernandez singled and would then score on an error to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the third. The Lions though would quickly reestablish a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

Once again the Royals had to come from behind as they started the top of the fifth with back to back singles and would then tie the game 2-2 on a sac fly by Emma McCraw. Neither team was able to retake the lead over 7 innings as the game headed to extras. The Royals would then take the lead in the top of the eight as Villanueva delivered a sac fly to give the Royals a 3-2 lead. Maaske then shut the Lions down in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 3-2 win.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they start a four game series against GSAC leaders Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Arizona Eagles with a doubleheader on Friday, March 28 at 12:00 PM at Fullerton College in Fullerton, CA.
