Royals Sweep Spirit with Comeback and Shutout

Surprise, AZ - The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (18-5, 5-3 GSAC) swept their GSAC series against the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit as they came from behind to win 7-6 and then won 9-0 on Saturday afternoon on the road in Surprise, AZ.

Game 1:
Kaitlyn Maaske got the start and pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing six runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out one. Alexis Galvan (5-3) picked up the win relief pitching the final 4 1/3 innings allowing just five hits while walking two and striking out two. Asia Chacon led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

The Spirit got to the Royals early as they took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Royals pulled a run back in the top of the third to make it 2-1 but the Spirit answered with a big bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 6-1. The Royals fought back as they made it 6-2 on a one out sac fly by Makenna Stuart in the top of the fourth.

Galvan would then shutdown the Spirit while the offense came racing back in the top of the sixth. The Royals would take advantage of an error to make it 6-3 before Gabriella Holmes delivered an RBI single to center to get the Royals within 6-4. Emma McCraw then followed with an RBI single down the right field line to make it 6-5. The Royals would then take the lead as Chacon ripped a two run double down the left field line to take a 7-6 lead. Galvan then retired the final six Spirit batters in order to seal the win.


Game 2:
Vivian Little (3-0) picked up her third win throwing a complete game 7 inning shutout allowing just two hits while walking two and striking out five. Alyssa Castaneda led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

The Royals broke through in the top of the first as Vivian Little reached on a bunt and then would score on a wild pitch to put the Royals up 1-0. Little then shutdown the Spirit putting them down in order for three straight innings. Castaneda the blasted a home run to leadoff the top of the fourth to make it 2-0. Later in the inning Lillian Hernandez delivered a two out RBI single to increase the Royals lead to 3-0. Emma McCraw then delivered a sac fly in the top of the fifth to make it 4-0.

The Spirit looked for an answer but Little continued to shut them down while the Royals broke open the game in the top of the seventh. The Royals loaded the bases with nobody out for Emma McCraw who worked a walk to make it 5-0. Castaneda then delivered a sac fly to make it 6-0. Chacon then ripped a two run triple to left center and would then score on a wild pitch as the Royals took a commanding 9-0 lead.

The Royals continue action on the road as they travel to Costa Mesa, CA to take on NCAA Division II Vanguard with a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 26 beginning at 1:00 PM
