Royals Sweep Spirit Behind Extra Inning Thriller

Surprise, AZ - The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (16-5, 3-3 GSAC) swept their GSAC series opening doubleheader against the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit with two thrilling wins 14-11 in 11 innings and 9-7 on Friday evening on the road in Surprise, AZ.

Game 1:
Alexis Galvan got the start and pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out one. Galvan also picked up the save getting the final out. Kaitlyn Maaske (9-2) picked up the win in relief pitching 6 1/3 innings allowing six runs, two earned on ten hits while walking one and striking out four. Sarah Reisler led the Royals going 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings until the Spirit broke through in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. The Royals then struck back in the top of the fifth with a big inning. The Royals would get three singles to load the bases before Reisler was hit by a pitch to make it 2-1. Vivian Littlie then delivered an RBI groundout to tie the game 2-2. Emma McCraw then lashed a two run single to right to put the Royals up 4-2. Later in the inning Samantha Villanueva delivered a two out two run single to increase the Royals lead to 6-2.

The Spirit would then strike for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-5. The Royals then tried to close out the game in the bottom of the seventh but the Spirit tied the game 6-6 to send it to extra innings. The Royals would take the lead in the top of the ninth as Asia Chacon delivered a two out RBI single to put the Royals back ahead 7-6. Then with two down Lillian Hernandez delivered an RBI single to make it 8-6. The Spirit would then tie the game 8-8 in the bottom of the ninth. Once again the Royals would take the lead in the top of the tenth on an RBI single to center by Reisler but the Spirit would answer with a run in the bottom of the tenth to tie it back up 9-9.

The Royals then broke through with a big inning in the top of the 11th as Chacon ripped a two run single to right center to put the Royals ahead 11-9. Back to back singles then brought in another run as Hernandez delivered an RBI single to center to make it 12-9. Later with two outs Reisler unleashed a two run double to left to put the Royals in control 14-9. The Spirit didn't back down though as they rallied to make it 14-11 but Galvan came back into the game to get the final out and save to secure the win.

Game 2:
Galvan got the start and pitched one inning allowing three runs on three hits while striking out one. Vivian Little (2-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 4 2/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six. Maaske picked up the save pitching 1 1/3 innings allowing just one hit while striking out one. Alyssa Castaneda led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs.

The Spirit jumped all over the Royals in the bottom of the first as they took a 3-0 lead. The Royals offense came storming back in the top of the second as Reisler got things started with a one out RBI single to center to make it 3-1. McCraw then delivered an RBI groundout to make it 3-2 before Castaneda crushed a three run bomb to centerfield to put the Royals up 5-3. 

The Spirit would quickly tie the game 5-5 in the bottom of the second but Bilbrey limited the damage getting a strikeout and a flyout to end the inning. The Royals then jumped back on top in the top of the fourth as Little came through with a one out RBI single to put the Royals ahead 6-5. Three more singles would follow as Chacon drove in two more runs to increase the Royals lead to 8-5. The Spirit kept fighting as they got two more runs back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-7. Reisler would then add an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a two out RBI single to make it 9-7 while Maaske worked around a double in the bottom of the seventh to retire the side and seal the win for her second save.

The Royals wrap up their GSAC series against OUAZ on Saturday, March 22 with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM in Surprise, AZ.
