No. 8 Royals Split Doubleheader with No. 25 Mustangs

Fullerton, CA – The No. 8 Hope International University baseball team (20-5, 6-1 GSAC) split their GSAC doubleheader against the No. 25 Master's University Mustangs as they dropped a close one 5-4 before bouncing back to win 17-3 on Saturday on the road in Santa Clarita, CA.

Game 1:
Jesus Munguia (5-2) got the start and took the loss pitching 4 1/3 innings allowing five runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out three. Amari Bartee led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Bartee got the Royals off to a quick start as he led off the top of the first with a home run to centerfield to put the Royals up 1-0. The Mustangs quickly answered with a home run in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1. The Mustangs would then take the lead in the bottom of the second 2-1. The Royals would then tie the game 2-2 in the top of the third with two outs on a fielder's choice by Colby Moran. The Royals then took the lead in the top of the fourth as Josiah Chavez delivered a one out RBI groundout to put the Royals up 3-2. Julian Francois then launched his third home run of the season to make it 4-2.

The Mustangs would rally in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead before Gio Besio came in from the bullpen to finish off the inning and limit the damage. Besio would shutdown the Mustangs over three innings allowing just three hits while striking out five. The Royals offense meanwhile tried to stage a comeback over the final four innings but were unable to generate a good opportunity against the Mustangs bullpen as they dropped their first GSAC game of the year 5-4.

Game 2:
Josh Landry (4-0) picked up his fourth win throwing 5 shutout innings allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out five. Bartee led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs.

Landry retired the Mustangs in order in the bottom of the first while the Royals offense struck for a big inning in the top of the second. With two on and nobody out Colby Moran ripped a two run single to center to put the Royals up 2-0. Later in the inning with one out Bartee and Julian Francois delivered back to back RBI doubles to increase the Royals lead to 5-0. The Royals then broke open the game in the top of the third as they had another big inning. With two on and one out Spencer Davis launched an RBI double to right center to make it 6-0. Two batters later Bartee delivered a two run single to left to make it 8-0. Julian Francois and David Shackelford then followed with back to back RBI singles to increase the Royals lead to 11-0.

The Mustangs looked for a response but Landry continued to deal putting the Mustangs down in order in the bottom of the third while the Royals struck again in the top of the fourth as Branden Chun-Ming led off with his second home run of the season to make it 12-0. The Royals offense wasn't done as they added more runs in the top of the fifth. With two on and one out Ivan Barragan lined an RBI single to left to make it 13-0. Manny Morales then followed with a pinch hit RBI single to center before Jaden Rez unloaded his first home run as a Royal, a three run shot as the Royals took a commanding 17-0 advantage.

The Mustangs would finally break through against the Royals bullpen in the bottom of the sixth to make it 17-3. Tyler Tilton then came in to get the final four outs allowing just one hit and striking out one to seal a 17-3 win as the Royals earned the doubleheader split.
