No. 2 Royals Sweep Sea Beggars With Blowout and Pitcher's Duel

Fullerton, CA – The No. 2 Hope International University baseball team (14-4) wrapped up a three game series against the Providence Christian College Sea Beggars with a doubleheader sweep winning 18-4 and 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Josh Landry (2-0) picked up his second win pitching 5 innings allowing one run, none earned on five hits while walking three and striking out ten. Julian Francois led the Royals offense going 3-for-3 with 6 RBIs including a home run.

Landry worked around an error in the top of the first to strikeout the side as he held the Sea Beggars off the board through the first three innings. The Royals also broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third as David Shackelford crushed a leadoff home run to put the Royals up 1-0. Three batters later Trotter Boston came through with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Later in the inning Willson Dunn drove in a run on a sac bunt and then was followed by a Spencer Davis RBI single as the Royals took a 4-0 lead.

The Sea Beggars looked for a response as they got a two out rally started with back to back singles and would score on a passed ball to make it 4-1. Landry limited the damage with a huge strikeout to end the threat. The Royals offense continued to score in the bottom of the fourth as Matthew Pinal delivered an RBI groundout followed by an RBI single by Josiah Chavez with one out to extend the Royals lead to 6-1. Then later in the inning Julian Francois lined a two run single to make it 8-1. The Royals would then scrape across another on a wild pitch to make it 9-1.

The Sea Beggars would answer with a run in the top of the sixth to pull within 9-2 but Chaz McWilliams eliminated any big threat with back to back strikeouts to end the inning. Francois then crushed a two run shot to right in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 11-2. The Sea Beggars would strike back in the top of the seventh to make it 11-4 but the Royals weren't done scoring either as Joey Legg came home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to increase the lead to 12-4. Later in the inning Spencer Davis delivered a sac fly followed by an RBI single from Nathan Estrada to give the Royals a 14-4 lead.

Matthew Gonzalez then shut the Sea Beggars down over the final two innings while the Royals offense added more runs in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out Francois and Davis ripped back to back two run doubles as the Royals went on to win 18-4.

Game 2:
Jesus Munguia (4-1) picked up his fourth win throwing 5 shutout innings allowing just one hit while striking out eight. Boom Ward picked up his second save pitching the final inning allowing no hits while striking out one. Trotter Boston led the Royals offense going 1-for-2 with a home run.

Unlike the first game this one was a pitcher's duel as Munguia worked around an error to strikeout the side in the top of the first. The Royals were unable to generate any offense in the first but broke the deadlock in the bottom of the second as Boston crushed his fourth Royals homerun to lead off the frame and put the Royals up 1-0. Branden Chun-Ming then worked a walk and would later score on an RBI groundout by Josiah Chavez to increase the Royals lead to 2-0.

The Sea Beggars looked for a response but Munguia continued to dazzle putting the Sea Beggars down in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings to keep them off the board. They would finally get a run in the top of the sixth off a leadoff home run but that's all reliever Gio Besio would allow as he retired the next three batters to end the inning. The Sea Beggars had one last chance in the top of the seventh but Ward was up to the task retiring them in order to pick up the save and seal a 2-1 win.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Chapman on Tuesday, March 4 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
