Royals Snap Three Game Slide With Big Win Over Owls

Fullerton, CA – The No. 2 Hope International University baseball team (2-3) ended their three game losing streak as they took down the Oregon Institute of Technology Owls 19-8 in their first ever meeting on Wednesday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Jesus Munguia got the start and pitched one inning allowing two runs on two hits. Ryder Stowasser (1-0) picked up the win relief pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing two runs on three hits. Nathan Estrada led the offense going 1-for-1 with a grand slam and 4 RBIs.

The Owls got to the Royals early in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Royals quickly responded as they turned over the entire lineup in the bottom of the first. Amari Bartee got things started just like he did in Florida by cranking a lead off home run to left to make it 2-1. The Royals then put runners on first and second with one out before Trotter Boston launched an RBI double to centerfield to tie the game 2-2. Branden Chun-Ming then followed with a two run double down the left field line to put the Royals on top 4-2. They weren't done yet as two batters later Josiah Chavez hit an RBI single to center to give the Royals a 5-2 lead.

Chaz McWilliams then came in to pitch the top of the second but couldn't keep the Owls off the board as they struck for another big inning to retake a 6-5 lead. That lead didn't last long though as the Royals sent eight of their batters to the plate during the bottom of the second. With two on and nobody out Kyle Harvey ripped a game tying RBI double to right field to make it 6-6. Colby Moran then put the Royals back ahead with an RBI groundout before Harvey scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-6. Then with two outs Alec Castillo unloaded his first home run of the year a two run shot to right to push the Royals lead to 10-6.

Stowasser who had come in to pitch in the second then pitched a 1-2-3 top of the third to keep the Owls at bay but the Owls would get back to work in the top of the fourth with two more runs to pull within 10-8. Mario Tostado then got two huge strikeouts to limit the damage. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly by Harvey to increase their lead to 11-8. Ryan Sveningson then shut down the Owls offense over the next two innings while the Royals offense kept hitting. Boston got things started in the bottom of the sixth by crushing his first home run as Royals over the right field wall to make it 12-8. The Royals would then add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on wild pitches to make it 14-8. The offense wasn't done yet as later in the bottom of the seventh Estrada got his first hit in five at bats so far this season as he crushed a pinch hit grand slam to left field to give the Royals an 18-8 lead. The Royals would then add one more run in the bottom of the eighth while Sakemi Sato, Matthew Gonzalez and Chandler De Jong closed out the game allowing just two hits to the Owls over the final three innings to seal a 19-8 win.

The Royals continue action at home against Oregon Tech as they play a doubleheader on Friday, February 7th beginning at 2:00 PM at Duane Winters Field.
