Landry and Seeley Dominate as Royals Shutout Lion Angels on Ring Day

Fullerton, CA – The No. 2 Hope International University baseball team (4-3) swept the Bethesda University Lions Angels with a pair of shutouts winning 20-0 and 10-0 on Saturday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA. In between games the 2024 World Series Champions were presented their rings.

Game 1:
Trey Seeley (1-0) got the start and picked up his first win of the season tossing 6 innings of no hit baseball while walking two and striking out nine. Julian Francois led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with RBIs including a home run.

The game was scoreless after one inning with Seeley putting the Lion Angels down in order while the Royals also went down in order in the bottom half. Seeley then worked around a runner in scoring position in the top of the second to keep the game scoreless. The Royals then opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Trotter Boston worked a one out walk before coming around to score on a wild pitch to put the Royals up 1-0. Then with two on and two down Francois crushed his first home run as a Royal over the right field wall to put the Royals up 4-0. The Royals then struck for another big inning in the bottom of the third. With two on and nobody out Boston and Colby Moran came through with back to back RBI groundouts to make it 6-0. Then two batters later Josiah Chavez crushed his first home run as a Royal to straightaway centerfield to increase the Royals lead to 8-0. The Royals would then take advantage of an error as they took a commanding 9-0 lead.

Seeley continued to deal striking out the side in the top of the fifth while the Royals offense got back to work in the bottom half. With two on and nobody out Francois reached on a fielder's choice to drive in a run and make it 10-0. Then with runners on the corner and one down Ryder Stowasser and Wilson Dunn delivered back to back RBI singles to increase the Royals lead to 13-0. Seeley then finished off the top of the sixth with two more strikeouts as he would finish his appearance with a no hitter. Nathan Estrada then delivered an RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth to make it 14-0. Gio Besio would then allow no hits in the top of the seventh while the Royals got right back to work on offense. Dunn and Moran delivered back to back doubles to get things started and make it 15-0. Moran would then come home on an error to make it 16-0.

The Lion Angels looked for a response but the Royals continued to hold them without a hit as Luke Wallin worked around an error to retire the side in the top of the eighth. The Royals would then add to their lead in the bottom of the eighth as Stowasser ripped a two run double down the right field line to push the lead to 18-0. Dunn then followed with his third RBI of the game to make it 19-0. Ivan Barragan then dropped an RBI single to right field as the Royals went up 20-0. The Lion Angels would then get their first hit in the top of the ninth but Boom Ward bounced back with a strikeout and a double play to seal the win.

Game 2:
Josh Landry (1-0) got the start and threw a complete game 7 inning shutout allowing just one hit while walking two and striking out seven.  

Landry worked around a hit batter in the top of the first to retire the Lion Angels while the Royals got on the board in the bottom of the first. With a runner on second and one down Kyle Harvey ripped an RBI double down the left field line to put the Royals up 1-0. Moran then smashed his first Royals home run to the deepest part of the park to increase the Royals lead to 3-0. The Royals started with a single and an error before Bartee and David Shackelford came through with back to back RBI doubles to increase the Royals advantage to 6-0. The Lion Angels looked for a response but Landry was up to the task working around two walks to retire the side and keep them off the board in the third and then the fourth innings.

The Royals offense then got back to work in the bottom of the fourth as they came up with three straight singles with another RBI from Moran to increase their advantage to 7-0. Landry then retired the Lion Angels in order in the top of the fifth while Mario Tostado launched his first home run of the year in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-0. Manny Morales then blasted his first Royals home run a two run shot in the bottom of the sixth to give the Royals a commanding 10-0 lead. Landry who had retired eight Lion Angels in a row then struck out the side to end the game and seal the win.

The Royals continue action at home as they host NCAA Division III Whittier on Tuesday, February 11 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
