Oliver Ties Ace Record as No. 13 Royals Sweep Bobcats

Fullerton, CA - The No. 13 Hope International men's volleyball team (7-3) bounced back from Wednesday's loss as they pulled off their third sweep of the season taking down the UC Merced Bobcats 3-0 on Friday afternoon at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals came out strong as they pulled out to a 9-3 lead with two kills from Cole Oliver and one each from Damon Potter and Julian Zavala all set up by Kyler Tufuga. The Bobcats tried to keep up with the Royals as they made it 13-8 but the Royals weren't having it as Oliver delivered another kill to start a 4-0 run to extend the Royals lead to 17-8. The Bobcats tried to stop the Royals but they closed out the set winning 25-11 behind four aces from Oliver and kills from Potter and Coby Prowse to lead 1-0. The Bobcats tried to rebound in the second set as they took an early 4-2 lead but the Royals would answer as the teams exchanged the lead with an ace from Zach Nicoletti putting the Royals ahead 8-7. The Bobcats would rally to tie it 12-12 but the Royals responded well as they extended their lead out to 23-19 on a block by Oliver and Sean Seaman. The Bobcats didn't give up as they made it 24-23 but the Royals held on as Tufuga set up Potter for the set winning kill 25-23 to take a 2-0 lead.

The Bobcats looked to stay alive in the third set but the Royals had other ideas as back to back kills from Seaman and Oliver put the Royals up 10-8. The Bobcats would rally to make it 11-10 but the Royals seized control with a 7-1 run led by more great serving from Oliver who added two more aces along with a kill and kills from Zavala, Potter and Danny Helou to take an 18-11 lead. The Bobcats didn't give up as they made it 20-15 but the Royals weren't about to allow a comeback as they closed out the set on a 5-2 run with a block by Potter and Tufuga sealing a 25-17 win and a 3-0 sweep. Oliver led the Royals with nine kills and tied the earlier record he set for aces with seven against Olivet Nazarene in the first game of the season.

The Royals continue action at home as they host Jamestown on Tuesday, March 4 at 6:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
