Royals Fall to NCAA DII Oaks 3-1

Atherton, CA - The Hope International men's volleyball team (5-2) dropped their final game of a three game road trip to Northern California as they fell 3-1 to the Division II Menlo College Oaks on Saturday afternoon in Atherton, CA.

It was a tight early on in the first set as the Royals squeaked out to an early 7-5 lead with a kill from Coby Prowse. The Oaks though came storming back to take a 13-8 lead. The Royals looked for an answer as a kill by Cole Oliver made it 15-12 but that's as close as the Royals got as the Oaks went on to win 25-20 and take a 1-0 lead. The Oaks took the early lead lead in the second set but the Royals used a 4-0 run with two aces from Prose and an Oliver kill from Kyler Tufuga to take an 8-6 lead. The Oaks would stay right on the Royals heels as they tied it before going to take a 15-14 lead. The Royals answered to go up 17-15 with two more kills by Oliver but the Oaks would rally to tie it 18-18. The Royals would answer with a 4-0 run with a kill from Oliver and Julian Zavala to take a 22-18 lead. The Oaks looked for a response but the Royals held on as another kill from Oliver sealed a 25-21 win and tied the game 1-1.

The Oaks took control in the third set as they led from start to finish but the Royals did make it competitive early on with a block from Santiago Mantovani and Prowse as they trailed 7-6. The Oaks would pull out to a 10-6 advantage but the Royals kept fighting as a kill by Zavala pulled them within 17-15. That's as close as the Oaks let them get as the Royals fell 25-19 and trailed 2-1. The Royals looked to stay alive in the fourth set as they took an early 4-1 lead with two kills by Zavala. The Oaks would rally to tie it before the Royals used a 5-1 run with two kills from Oliver and one from Sean Seaman to take a 13-9 lead. The Oaks would quickly anser to make it 13-12 before eventually going on to take a 20-18 lead. The Royals looked for an answer as a kill by Prowse made it 21-20 but the Oaks weren't interested in allowing a comeback as they went on to win 25-21 with the Royals falling 3-1. Oliver led the Royals with 21 kills while Tufuga led with 45 assists. 

The Royals continued action with their home opener as they host Simpson on Tuesday, February 18 at 1:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
