Royals Take Down Red Hawks 3-1 in Home Opener

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International men's volleyball team (6-2) bounced back from their second loss with a 3-1 win over the Simpson University Red Hawks in their home opener on Tuesday afternoon in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals took the early lead in the first set as back to back kills from Cole Oliver put them up 6-3. The Red Hawks would come storming back to take an 11-8 lead. The Royals then answered with a kill from Coby Prowse to make it 11-9 but the Red Hawks kept scoring as they went up 14-9. The Royals tried to regroup after a timeout to make it 14-11 but they couldn't stop the Red Hawks as they pulled away to a 22-15 lead before taking set one 25-16 as the Royals trailed 1-0. The Red Hawks tried to keep their momentum into the second set but the Royals finally found an answer as they went on a 6-1 run to take an 11-6 lead with another kill from Oliver and an ace from Prowse. This time the Red Hawks looked to regroup after the timeout but the Royals got their blockers going as they went on a 7-1 run led by blocks from Oliver, Sean Seaman and Damon Potter to take a commanding 18-8 lead. The Red Hawks would get within 20-13 but the Royals held strong as Kyler Tufuga set up Sean Seaman for the set winning kill to win 25-16 and tie the game 1-1.

The third set was all tied up 6-6 early on but the Royals seized control with great serving from Prowse and blocks from Seaman, Tufuga and Julian Zavala to take a commanding 16-6 lead. The Red Hawks looked for an answer as they made it 21-13 but the Royals had all of them as a kill from Danny Helou and two more from Zavala sealed a 25-14 win to put the Royals ahead 2-1. The Royals looked to close out the game as they took an early 7-3 lead with a kill from Potter and an ace from Oliver. The Royals then pulled out to a 10-5 advantage before going on an 8-0 run with more great serving from Prowe with four more aces and a kill to give the Royals a commanding 18-5 lead. The Royals then shut down the Red Hawks attack closing out the game with blocks from Benjamin Blanco, Quentin Roberts, Potter and Tufuga to win 25-7 and 3-1. Prowse led the Royals with 15 kills and .565 hitting percentage along with six aces. 

The Royals continue action at home as they face a big test against No. 8 Westcliff on Wednesday, February 19 at 7:30 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
