Royals Drop Doubleheader to Gyrenes and Bulldogs

Auburndale, FL – The No. 2 Hope International University baseball team (1-2) dropped both games of their doubleheader at the East West Challenge as they fell 15-6 to the Ave Maria University Gyrenes before dropping a rematch of last year's World Series Championship game 5-4 to the Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs on Friday in Auburndale, FL.

Game 1:
Jesus Munguia (0-1) got the start and took the loss pitching 3 innings allowing five runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three. Alec Castillo and Kyle Harvey led the offense with two RBIs each.

The Royals jumped on top in the top of the first as Harvey delivered a two out RBI single to make it 1-0. The lead didn't last long as the Gyrenes put up a four spot in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead. The Royals fought back in the top of the second as they made it 4-2 on a fielder's choice before Matthew Pinal came through with a two out RBI single to pull the Royals within 4-3. The Gyrenes would add another run in the bottom of the third as the Royals trailed 5-3.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth the Royals looked for a response in the top of the sixth. The Royals got things started with a double and a walk and then tied the game 5-5 as Castillo ripped an RBI double to left field. The Royals pitching couldn't stop the Gyrenes as they tacked as they scored seven more runs over the next two innings to lead 12-5. The Royals tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth as they put two on with two out but they were only able to scratch one run across on a fielder's choice to make it 12-6. The Gyrenes would then score three more as the Royals fell 15-6.

Game 2:
Trey Seeley got the start and pitched 4 innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out six. Chaz McWilliams (0-1) took the loss in relief pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing two runs on no hits while walking three and striking out two.

The Royals once again opened the scoring in the top of the first as Amari Bartee reached on an error and then would come around to score on a steal of home to put the Royals up 1-0. The Bulldogs would answer in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1. The Bulldogs would then get to Seeley in the bottom of the third as they took a 3-1 lead. The Royals didn't stay down for long as they rallied in the top of the sixth. Bartee led things off with a single before Devin Shackleford unloaded an RBI triple to right center to make it 3-2. Kyle Harvey then came through with an RBI groundout to tie the game 3-3.

The game didn't stay tied for long as the Bulldogs got two two out RBIs to take a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. After failing to score in the seventh and eighth inning the Royals had one last chance in the top of the ninth. Brandon Chun-Ming walked to lead things off and put himself in scoring position after a wild pitch and groundout before coming home to score on a one out RBI single by Ivan Barragan to make it 5-4. The Royals then brought the go ahead run to the plate but would run into two outs on the bases after Bartee reached via error to end the game as they fell 5-4.

The Royals wrap up action at the East West Challenge as they take on the host No. 11 Southeastern University Fire on Saturday, February 1 at 3:00 PM in Lakeland, FL.
