Royals Wrap Up Gray Wolf Invitational With 3-1 Win Over Lourdes

Sylvania, OH - The Hope International men's volleyball team (2-1) won their second game in a row as they took down the host Lourdes University Gray Wolves 3-1 in the final game of the Gray Wolf Invitational on Friday afternoon in Sylvania, OH.

The host Gray Wolves started out on the front foot as they took an early 5-3 lead. That lead didn't last long as the Royals sparked to life off kills from Cole Oliver and Julian Zavala before a service ace from Coby Prowse put them up 8-6. The hosts would battle back to tie it 10-10 but the Royals would seize control with a 5-0 run with Sergio Garcia setting up two big kills from Prowse and Sean Seaman to increase their lead to 15-10. The Royals then continued to build on their lead led by three kills from Julian Zavala and one from Oliver to take a commanding 22-14 lead. The Gray Wolves tried to regroup after a timeout but it was all Royals as a Danny Helou kill and a double block by Helou and Seaman sealed a 25-16 win and a 1-0 lead. The Gray Wolves would again take the early lead in the second set but once again with kills from Zavala and Helou the Royals took an 8-5 lead. The Gray Wolves would battle back to within one multiple times including at 14-13 but the Royals responded well as they stretched their lead to 21-16 with kills from Oliver, Seaman and Prowse along with two aces from Oliver. The Gray Wolves would once again fight to within one at 22-21 but the Royals didn't let up as Helou delivered another big kill setup by Sam D'Ambrosio to spark a 3-0 run as the Royals closed out the set with a Santiago Mantovani kill to win 25-21 and take a 2-0 lead.

The Gray Wolves weren't about to go down easily as they leapt out to a 15-9 lead in the third set. The Royals looked for a response as another Helou kill helped pull them within 15-12. The Gray Wolves didn't fold though as they extended their lead out to 23-14. The Royals didn't give up as they fought back to get within 24-18 off a kill by Oliver but that's as close as they got as the Gray Wolves prevailed 25-18 to make it 2-1. The Gray Wolves continued their momentum into the fourth set as they went up 11-8 but the Royals quickly turned the set around with some great serving by Prowse who delivered two service aces to put the Royals up 13-12. The Gray Wolves weren't done either as they fought back to go up 17-16. The teams then exchanged points until the Gray Wolves pulled out to a 22-20 lead. The Royals then fought back with three kills in a row from Damon Potter, Zavala and Oliver to retake a 23-22 lead. The Gray Wolves answered with back to back kills to go up 24-23 with a chance to send the game to a fifth set. The Royals weren't about to allow that to happen as a kill by Oliver tied it before a block by Potter and Seaman gave the Royals match point at 25-24. Mantovani then finished off the game with an ace as the Royals won 26-24 and 3-1. Zavala led the Royals with 13 kills while Oliver added 12 and Prowse 10.

The Royals continue play on the road as they head to Indiana to take on Indiana University East on Monday, January 27 at 2:00 PM PT.
