Royals Win Marathon Fourth Set to Take Down Jimmies 3-1

Sylvania, OH - The Hope International men's volleyball team (1-1) picked up their first win of the season as they won a marathon fourth set to seal a 3-1 win over the Jamestown University Jimmies in game two of the Gray Wolf Invitational at Lourdes University on Friday evening in Sylvania, OH.

The Royals came out looking like the better team as they opened on a 5-0 run with two service aces and a kill from Cole Oliver. The Jimmies though crawled back into the game as they eventually went up 9-8. The teams would then exchange the lead before the Jimmies took over to go up 22-18. Two kills by Julian Zavala tried to keep the Royals alive but they fell 25-22 and trailed 1-0. The Royals started off the second set well as once again Oliver helped them out to an early 6-2 lead with two more aces and a kill. The Jimies tried to keep it close but this time the Royals pulled away with a 6-2 run finished off by another Oliver kill to go up 14-9. The Jimmies tried to regroup after a timeout as they made it 14-11 but the Royals continued to excel as they went up 21-12 off two block from Coby Prowse and Santiago Mantovani and two aces from Prowse. The Jimmies looked for an answer but the Royals had all of them as Zavala, Oliver and Damon Potter delivered big kills to seal a 25-18 win to tie the game 1-1.

The Royals continued their momentum into the third as they took an early 8-3 lead by two aces and two kills from Zavala. The Royals went on to lead 14-8 with another kill and ace by Prowse but this time the Jimmies rallied to tie it 16-16 before going on to lead 21-19. The Royals swung the set around as Prowse delivered a huge kill to start a 6-0 run as the Royals won 25-21 to take a 2-1 lead led by three kills from Prowse and one block. The Royals looked to close out the game in the fourth set but the Jimmies had other ideas as they took a 13-12 lead. The Royals would answer with good serving from Prowse including an ace as they went up 15-13. The Jimmies would come back to tie it 16-16 but the Royals would go up 22-20 with another kill from Prowse. The Royals would then go up 24-22 with another kill by Oliver but the Jimmies would come back to tie it and force the Royals into 10 different match point opportunities. The Jimmies themselves also had a chance to win the set as they went up 33-32 but the Royals would get back to back kills from Oliver and Zavala to go back up 34-33. The Jimmies then tied it but the Royals finally closed out the set getting a huge block from Zavala and Mantovani to force their 11th match point before Prowse forced the game winning error to win 36-34 and 3-1. Zavala led the Royals with 18 kills while Oliver added 17 kills and five aces.

The Royals continue play at the Gray Wolf Invitational as they take on host Lourdes on Saturday, January 25 at 3:00 PM PT at Lourdes University in Sylvania, OH.
