Nugent's Ace Seals Royals Five Set Thriller Win Over Warriors

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International women's volleyball team (7-4, 1-0) opened their GSAC schedule with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Life Pacific University Warriors on Wednesday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Warriors took an early 10-7 lead before the Royals came right back on a 6-1 run with kills from Rachel Holmberg, Cassidy Koffroth, Rachael Street and Yale Spoja to take a 13-11 advantage. The Warriors would keep the game close as the Royals led 18-16 before going on a 5-1 run finished off by a Street kill to expand their advantage to 23-17. The Warriors weren't done as they rallied to cut it to 24-22 but the Royals weren't to be denied as they won 25-22 and took a 1-0 lead. The Royals continued their momentum into the second set as they took an early 5-2 lead before racing out to a 10-4 advantage helped by three service aces from Cassidy Koffroth. The Warriors tried to keep it close but the Royals went on a 6-1 run with three kills from Savannah Salter to take a 16-7 lead before going on to lead 20-11. The Warriors didn't give up as they rallied to get within 23-20 but the Royals had all the answers as back to back kills from Holmberg helped the Royals to a 25-20 set win and a 2-0 lead.

The Warriors weren't about to be swept as they fought back in the third set. They would start on a 6-1 run before going on to take a 10-2 lead. The Royals tried to rally with back to back kills from Street and Addie Mathias but the Warriors had all the answers as they raced out to a 23-9 advantage. Once again the Royals tried to rally but they were unable to get anything going as they fell 25-12 with the Warriors making it 2-1. It was a back and forth fourth set as the Warriors took an early 12-9 lead. The Royals would answer with a 6-0 run finished off by a Kat Schwab kill to take a 15-12 lead. The Warriors would regroup after a timeout as they came storming back to take a 21-16 lead. The Royals weren't done either as they came storming back on a 7-2 run with two big kills from Salter to tie it 23-23. The Warriors though would answer with the final two points to win 25-23 and tie the game 2-2.

The Royals looked to close out the game in the fifth set as they raced out to a 10-4 advantage led by two kills from Koffroth. The Warriors didn't go down easily as they rallied to make it 13-12 but the Royals answered forcing a service error and then Annie Nugent delivered a perfect service ace landing on the backline to win the set 15-13 and the game 3-2. Addie Mathias led the Royals with 11 kills and 17 assists while Naomi Ruiz led with 22 digs.

The Royals continue action on the road as they travel to Santa Clarita, CA to take on The Master's on Saturday, September 21 at 2:00 PM.
