Royals Defeat Spirit but Fall to No. 12 Warriors in GSAC Final

Irvine, CA – The No. 8 Hope International University baseball team (37-14) took down the OUAZ Spirit 7-4 before falling 10-9 to the No. 12 Jessup University Warriors in the GSAC Tournament final on Wednesday afternoon at the OC Great Park Baseball Stadium in Irvine, CA.

Game 1:
Justin Drury (8-0) picked up his eighth win as he threw 6 2/3 innings allowing four runs, two earned on seven hits while striking out three. Boom Ward picked up his second save pitching 2 ? no hit innings while striking out two. Amari Bartee led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with 5 RBIs.

It was a pitcher's duel early on as neither team had a baserunner until the bottom of the third. The Royals would then open the scoring in the top of the fourth as they put runners on the corners with one down. Alec Arnone then lined an RBI single up the middle to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Dean Toigo then ripped an RBI double down the right-field line to make it 2-0. Two batters later Bartee launched a two-run double to deep left center to increase the Royals lead to 4-0.

The Spirit battled back as they got a run in the bottom of the fourth and bottom of the fifth innings as they pulled within 4-2. The Royals would answer in the top of the sixth as Bartee launched a three run home run to left field to increase the Royals lead back to four at 7-3. Drury then shut the Spirit down in the bottom of the sixth as he worked around a leadoff single to retire the side. The Spirit kept coming though as they made it 7-4 but that's all they got as Ward came in from the bullpen to get a flyout to limit the damage. Ward then shut down the Spirit over the next two innings to seal a 7-4 win as the Royals advanced to play Jessup for a chance at the Championship.

Game 2:
David Rudd-Grow got the start and pitched 4 innings allowing six runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out two. Chandler De Jong (1-1) took the loss in relief. Alec Arnone led the Royals offense going 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs.

The Royals took an early 1-0 lead as Arnone ripped a one out RBI double to left center in the top of the first. The Warriors would answer with three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead. The Royals quickly battled back to retake the lead in the top of the third as they hit five straight singles including another from Arnone to make it 3-2 and one from Derek Sims to put the Royals back ahead 4-3. Bartee then laid down a beautiful bunt to bring home another run as the Royals increased their lead to 5-3. Toigo then smashed his team leading 12th home run of the season to right field to lead off the top of the fifth and put the Royals up 6-3.

The Warriors weren't done either as they took advantage of two hit batters with the bases loaded and multiple errors to retake an 8-6 lead. The Royals didn't give up though as they rallied in the top of the eighth. The Royals would load the bases with one out before Arnone stepped to the plate and unleashed a two run double down the right field line to tie the game 8-8. Sims would then deliver a sac fly to put the Royals back ahead 9-8. Steven Ordorica then held the Warriors off the board until the top of the ninth when he exited after an infield hit started the inning. The Royals were then two outs away from forcing a winner-take-all all Championship game on Thursday but they were unable to hold on as they fell 10-9.

The Royals will have to sit and wait to see if they are selected as an at large team for the NAIA Opening Round which will be held May 13-16. Tune into the NAIA Selection Show on Thursday, May 9 at 2:00 PM PT to learn their fate.
